Lens of Reason 17 - Technology
We continue along thinking that technological progress is the true value of our civilization.
We have left behind all things with meaning and replaced them with shiny objects.
Technological progress has allowed vast optimizations of efficiency for all things that our society produces. However, at great scale and efficiency, meaning is often lost in all the things that we create.
Long since gone are the architectures that seemed to capture the essence of life and reflect the beauty of our existence. Once, every facet of our creation was the direct manifestation of someone’s long contemplation. It permeated that work and could be seen in its structure.
Society is now far more machine and algorithm than the spirit of humanity. AI, social media and automation are transforming the human experience. All optimizing for what is now the most important attribute, attention, rather than genuine connection. Everything read, spoken, and seen is for one purpose, to incentivize you to gaze, buy and consume rather than reflect, create and connect.
“Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards.”
― Aldous Huxley
