Philosophy for Rebels 18 - Ideology
Ideologies do not end simply because they are wrong.
They end when the suffering has burned to ash the last remnants of hope.
Ideologies are not analytical theories that will simply be discarded when it is demonstrated they result in destructive outcomes. Adherents to ideologies seek something beyond an outcome. It is a force that binds together a collective group of people with a common purpose or meaning for their existence.
The desire for connection and belonging is a very powerful motivator of our behaviors and we will often choose to align with that over everything else. The struggles from damaging ideologies become fights for the righteous when an ideology is within its death throes.
Do not be so quick to assume victory over intolerant ideologies when the pain first becomes apparent. That is only a prelude to the pain that will be required to endure before the daylight appears once again.
“Ideologies separate us. Dreams and anguish bring us together.”
— Eugéne Ionesco
