What’s Changed In AI Coding?

After three years of extreme hype and literally lying about AI’s capability for writing code, it would be hard to fault anyone for thinking there is still nothing useful. And make no mistake, it is still being massively overhyped today; however, underneath all of the rhetoric is a capability that has actually improved.

AI, in some aspects, continues to prove both the proponents and critics wrong about its true capabilities. Many of the things that were faked a year ago are beginning to work, and some things they are showing you today are still being faked.

A Year Ago It Was Still Useless

This time last year, my own personal assessment for AI as a tool to productively write code was that it was almost entirely useless, at least for the personal tasks I attempted. There were just too many hallucinations causing errors, and it would continually break things you had gotten working.

What’s Different Now? Verifier Loops

I’ve spent the last two months using some of the latest tools and models for coding to update my opinion. The models are better, but the instrumental change in capability didn’t come from only model improvements, but from the use of coding harnesses as a way to solve many of the problems inherit to LLM code generation.

It is a pattern reminiscent of Google’s Alpha models in that using a coding harness allows the LLMs to run in a loop with a verifier. This pattern can only work for formal domains, but it is effective here. Since LLMs have no way of perceiving correct or incorrect answers, an external system must indicate if the answer is correct.

Code benefits from this pattern, as we have compilers, tests, structural analysis, etc., which allow us to programmatically determine correctness. The models remain unintelligent and still hallucinate, but the harness lets the LLM simply keep trying until it creates a result that passes.

How Significant Are Coding Harnesses?

The models are now being specifically trained for this type of workflow which allows them to more reliably call tools by responding with structured text. For tasks that can be structured this way with verifiers, LLMs can provide useful utility.

How much are coding harnesses and verifier-loop methods contributing to the capability of LLMs to write code? Their contribution substantially changes the results. A recent paper, “EsoLang-Bench: Evaluating Genuine Reasoning in Large Language Models via Esoteric Programming Languages,” evaluated LLMs on programming tasks for which the models have little training data supporting the chosen language.

models achieving 85-95% on standard benchmarks score only 0-11% on equivalent esoteric tasks, with 0% accuracy beyond the Easy tier.

This is a total collapse of capability outside the training distribution. However, the paper’s authors did not use coding harnesses in the evaluation done within the paper. The author’s wrote this afterward.

So this is the answer to what has changed in AI coding. Coding harnesses using a verifier-loop pattern are able to substantially increase the useful output of LLMs. This pattern is the only way to use LLMs to mitigate the hallucinations and lack of true reasoning.

However, not everything is possible to verify. The soundness of the overall application architecture and design isn’t something that can easily be distilled into a set of testable conditions. Therefore, our ability to create applications that actually work has substantially advanced forward, but be warned: the fine print is extensive. Many landmines remain for its use, which we will cover further down.

How Fast Is It Changing?

The way development is being done is rapidly shifting, or at least it appears so. We have analytics from GitHub that signal an accelerating increase in AI models writing code.

Note that this doesn’t tell us the number of projects using AI. A few projects going heavy into AI will easily dominate the overall commit graph, as AI automation easily increases such numbers.

4% of GitHub public commits are being authored by Claude Code right now. At the current trajectory, we believe that Claude Code will be 20%+ of all daily commits by the end of 2026. While you blinked, AI consumed all of software development.

Also, consider these numbers are underreported as many commits using AI are not directly authored by AI. They are instead done by humans using AI.

The Instructible Copy Machine

I’ve recently been using this definition for AI: “AI is a highly sophisticated, instructible, lossy copy machine. Each generation is simply improving the fidelity of the copies.”

This captures all of the important concepts, such as the fact that it is data-dependent, that it can still improve substantially, but will always be limited to permutations of the existing, and its repeated use degrades information over time.

Next.js: AI Is Good at Copying

Cloudflare recently demonstrated the use of AI to “copy” an existing framework, Next.js, to a new platform.

Last week, one engineer and an AI model rebuilt the most popular front-end framework from scratch. The result, vinext (pronounced “vee-next”), is a drop-in replacement for Next.js, built on Vite, that deploys to Cloudflare Workers with a single command.

In early benchmarks, it builds production apps up to 4x faster and produces client bundles up to 57% smaller. And we already have customers running it in production. The whole thing cost about $1,100 in tokens.

How we rebuilt Next.js with AI in one week

Cloudflare noted that this was only possible because the Next.js test suite is extensive and documentation is significantly prevalent within the training data. They simply ported the existing Next.js tests as the specification the AI would use to complete tasks.

SkyRoads: A Copy by Reverse Engineering

If you have a detailed specification, AI likely can make a replica of the specification in another form. There is no greater detail about how code works than the code itself.

Note, this is impressive, but before we leap to saying any existing game IP is now vulnerable to being auto reverse engineered, consider that the size of the generated Rust code base is tiny at less than 10k lines of code.

The Coming AI Clone Wars

Nonetheless, we now see the trajectory. With enough scaling, the size of reverse-engineerable code bases will increase. I wrote about this potential outcome over three years ago in “AI and the end to all things ...“, in which I suggested that the AI clone wars will likely be coming as AI provides an effective bypass of intellectual property protections.

Similarly, just as video generation is much better when provided a real image as a reference, code generation is far better when there is a reference point for the generation.

This is an incredibly useful utility to migrate code bases to new architectures, frameworks, and libraries. I tested this recently myself with a library of my own, migrating from Java to JavaScript, and it worked very well.

AI Culture Is Theft Culture

However, this is certainly a double-edged sword, as all of your competitors now have a tool to copy all your work, bypassing any type of intellectual-property protection. I suppose it should not be too surprising that a technology built by scraping everything everyone ever created and claiming it as its own inspires the very same mindset in many of its most ardent proponents.

The abject hypocrisy of the AI labs complaining about IP theft is astounding: “Please don’t steal our stolen data.”

And then we have Cursor claiming they built a $50B in-house model that turns out to just be Kimi 2.5.

One of AI’s top uses continues to be taking what other people have created and making it your own.

The Problems Also Accelerate

The problem with AI technology is that it seems every advance of useful utility is met with a multi-fold increase in nefarious capability. The balance between productive uses and nefarious uses is significantly asymmetric.

Vibeware: Vibe-coded Malware

Low Level talks here about being able to produce a hundred times more malware essentially for free using LLMs.

Once again, the useful utility of being able to copy from existing implementations is easily exploitable for nefarious use at large scale.

By adopting niche languages like Nim, Zig, or Crystal, the actor resets the detection baseline for security engines. LLMs make these languages accessible by collapsing the expertise gap, allowing developers to generate functional code in unfamiliar languages by simply porting logic from more common ones.

The vibeware model also naturally facilitates the adoption of Living Off Trusted Services (LOTS) for both command and control and data exfiltration. LLMs are highly effective at generating stable code for platforms like Discord, Slack, and Google Sheets because of the vast number of public SDKs and documentation in their training data

Writing Code for Attention

Developers are starting to get fed up with bots trying to contribute to projects. It seems there are those who want to boost their GitHub activity, possibly for clout or as a reference for job applications, and are using AI to make the numbers go up.

However, this results in a high volume of AI-slop-level submissions that only serve to waste the time of the project maintainers, who now have to sort through all of the noise.

The incentives for open source collaboration are collapsing. Bots create an unmanageable burden of work, and AI’s copy ability makes your project vulnerable to simply being assimilated by others without contribution back to your project.

AI Abandonware: The New Era of Application Spam

Application spam may begin to resemble social media spam. As the cost of building applications approaches zero, their value becomes zero. A flood of applications that will never be maintained, as they are unsustainable. They will be created only to capture attention and then abandoned.

Creating an application becomes as cheap as a social media posts. Engagement bait in the form of applications that appear impressive but are barely functional and will never be maintained.

How it begins:

The effort required to build a product that has the outward appearance of something professional is now extremely low. The OpenReel website and the app’s screenshots give an impression of capability and quality that simply isn’t there.

This is the result of lowering the cost of entry to a problem space for people who have no understanding of that problem space. Now anyone can create AI abandonware for nearly free.

Technical Debt by Default

Time-consuming tedious updates can be done for you by AI, but consequently, it takes away the incentives to fix why tedious updates are needed. Therefore, duplication and boilerplate explode effortlessly.

Combined with AI’s tendency to add its own unnecessary code to any task that you give it, this can quickly can get out of hand. I often find unused code and uncalled functions added to the codebase. As development progresses, these unneeded additions begin to confuse the AI during future tasks.

Technical debt typically grows slowly over long periods of time as applications grow and requirements change. However, AI injects many of the technical-debt-type problems from the start.

True Believers Now Have Doubts

There is somewhat of a honeymoon effect for users of AI that collapses quickly as complexity rises. Once you cross a certain threshold, everything starts breaking.

AI can certainly massively accelerate some facets of initial coding, but what we want to know is at what cost? What are the tradeoffs? The issue is that, although we know there are tradeoffs, they are very difficult to perceive and quantify. You never know which tasks are appropriate to assign to the AI and which are not.

Failures can only be perceived in hindsight, as the AI is incapable of self-assessing its own capability. Neither benchmarks nor the AI labs building LLMs can give us guidance about their capability as applied to any individual task. There is no other method except trial and error.

AI Is Not Like a Compiler

Some argue that AI is just a higher level of abstraction, like a compiler. Their argument is that this is simply the next natural progression for a direction we have already been taking.

However, a compiler is deterministic. You will always get exactly the same output. It will not deteriorate over time. A compiler will not slowly decay code that you are not paying attention to.

I was once paid a lot of money to find and fix nondeterministic behavior in code. We once called these behaviors bugs; now we spend billions to make this behavior the base layer of all software and call it a feature.

Congratulations You Are Now a Micromanager

Unsurprisingly, workers are finding themselves up against the limits of their cognitive abilities when working this way. In recent weeks, online AI users have described increased cognitive load, “saturated” attention, and mental fatigue in social media posts.

Engineer Francesco Bonacci, founder of Cua AI, wrote a popular X post titled “Vibe Coding Paralysis: When Infinite Productivity Breaks Your Brain” in which he lamented: “I end each day exhausted—not from the work itself, but from the managing of the work. Six worktrees open, four half-written features, two ‘quick fixes’ that spawned rabbit holes, and a growing sense that I’m losing the plot entirely.”

The workflow model using AI is always going to be one in which you become the micromanager. This is due to Polanyi’s Paradox, which I covered in “AI Prompt to Movie Will Never Happen.” Getting the outcome you want requires extensive elaboration. AI is biased toward the average of everything, and you must diligently push against this bias for valuable output.

You may easily find yourself caught between micromanagement and code reviews, two tasks that simply cannot be given to the machine. The more you scale up, the more time you must commit to these often-considered-least-enjoyable tasks, but you must push harder for the fear that everyone is passing you.

Every opportunity to automate is the opportunity to take on more work. But unlike having humans working for you, you can never fully delegate tasks to the AI. The AI will not learn, become competent and be self-sufficient. It will always depend on human intelligence to guide it and review its output. This limits useful scaling potential substantially.

The Hype Accelerates

Despite some useful utility advances, hype still far exceeds any true capability. In order to pay for these very expensive machines they need the entire population paying their monthly subscriptions. They will do anything to entice the money flow.

Anthropic C Compiler From Scratch.

ThePrimeagen covers the recent hype around Anthropic’s claims of building a C compiler completely from scratch using AI.

This little product demo that they did, the language inside the video, it is the most dishonest framing of what they actually did versus what they’re saying they did. Anthropic and its non-stop hyping of the AI models is perhaps one of the most annoying features of 2025 and it’s coming into 2026 with a whole new level of rigor and completeness.”

Anthropic’s own breakdown of what they did is described in “Anthropic’s Building a C compiler with a team of parallel Claudes.”

Cursor’s Browser From Scratch

We also have claims from Cursor that they were able to build a browser from scratch within a week.

It’s 3M+ lines of code across thousands of files. The rendering engine is from-scratch in Rust with HTML parsing, CSS cascade, layout, text shaping, paint, and a custom JS VM.”

And then we have the reality take:

It wrote 3M lines of code that nobody really knows what it does, and never will, for an outcome of “It *kind of* works!” as stated by Cursor’s CEO. These “from scratch” examples are gross exaggerations of what was achieved, and both Anthropic’s compiler and Cursor’s browser are now just abandonware.

It Is Not Cheap: Token Burning Machines

How much does it cost to build applications with AI? You will see hyped examples, such as the Next.js rewrite above, that cost about $1,100. However, these are likely significant outliers for any serious project.

Over the last two months I’ve used OpenCode to assist with the following projects:

• LLM Terminal: a small TUI written in Go that helps my testing of different LLMs

• String Cursor: conversion of one of my own personal libraries from Java to JS

• LLM Proxy: a utility that allows me to inspect what these coding agents are doing

• Static Website Generator: some template modifications of Hugo

• Info Query Tool: an experiment with LLMs to filter hallucinations from search

• And more miscellaneous experiments

If it wasn’t for OpenCode providing free access for everyone, I would have done none of the above. If I had to pay the full compute costs, it would likely have been at minimum hundreds of dollars, maybe a few thousand, for these tasks.

The true costs of building and running these machines are astounding. It is still far from certain they will become efficient enough to be profitable. For now, they are giving away compute in attempt to create users, and it is costing them dearly.

The hyperscalers are now spending 94% of their operating cash flows on AI infrastructure. Amazon is projected to go negative free cash flow this year with as much as $28 billion in the red. Alphabet’s free cash flow is expected to collapse 90% from $73 billion to $8 billion.

Unpredictable Costs

LLM coding harnesses are token burning machines. In some cases I’ve watched them generated nearly a million tokens for a two-line CSS change. The costs are highly unpredictable. I’ve had them get stuck on some problems for hours. Since it was free, I just let it run to see if it could ever resolve the task. Sometimes it did; other times I eventually had to intervene.

The variance in time and cost estimations are wild. For any given task, it is somewhere between instant and never, with no way to predict beforehand, as LLMs cannot tell you what they will or will not be able to do. This is highly problematic for project planning.

Fixing the AI Slop Will Cost Too

As previously mentioned, technical debt begins immediately on AI-assisted projects. It is a rapidly growing burden that most are unlikely to take into account when assessing AI productivity.

You might be able to instruct AI to cleanup some of its own slop, but it will cost you. All of this will eat into your productivity gains.

The Risks Aren’t Always Apparent

Paradoxically, as AI gets better and error rates reduce, the catastrophic errors will increase. This is due to increased trust. Hallucinations are unpredictable and do not necessarily correlate with complexity; they often occur with the most simplistic tasks.

It All Just Suddenly Went Terribly Wrong

Delete all your code and delete all your money. Amazon has had several major outages in recent months and AI assisted development has been cited as the reason.

Problems can appear out of nowhere. Anything the AI can access through tooling is a problem just waiting to happen. It is only a matter of time before nondeterministic behavior finds a way to create havoc.

It Still Fails the Most Simplistic Tasks

Kevin Kern posted this screenshot where Gemini 3.1 Pro, the latest model that crushed all the benchmarks, cannot follow the most simple directions. Here it is adds code to git although it was instructed specifically not to. It apologizes and then does it again.

And here is SOTA genius model Claude Opus 6 providing some “help” to one of my own projects:

If I were to follow Claude’s instructions here, I would lose all of the current modifications in the project. Despite being able to build entire projects, such as Next.js, LLMs still fail on substantially trivial information and tasks.

As models get better at the complex, users do not always expect such simple failures, but they will remain and will likely result in costing companies lots of money.

Problems Can Exist for a Long Time

AI is very convincing that it is doing a competent job. You can be misled for a long time before it becomes apparent, and end up in the situation like the following.

Any human with these same characteristics, lying, making up data, and inconsistent performance, would never be employable. They would be fired for negligence, incompetence, and malicious activity. How long will companies accept this for their AI agents?

As It Gets Better It Becomes a Greater Risk

The worst thing we could do is to trust it. META’s head of AI safety and alignment makes precisely this mistake.

If the head of AI safety and alignment makes such careless mistakes, the maturity of the AI industry is an absolute joke.

“I feel like in the past six months, Codex and all these AI tools have gotten smarter and smarter, and more useful too. But there’s also a paradox: the smarter the model gets, the better it gets at deceiving the person assigning it tasks.

For example, if you want it to fix a warning or an error, it may use other tricks instead like changing config, disabling the warning, or rewriting the code in an equivalent form just to bypass the check.”

Hangbo Zhang is making the point that as AI gets better it also often gets worse in some other dimension. These issues of trust in the amid improving AI reliability are something I wrote about three years ago in “AI and the end to all things.“

AI Is an Open Invitation for Exploit

LLMs cannot be secured by design. The attack surface is the entirety of everything expressible in human language. Security must always treat LLMs always as potential hostile actors. Therefore, any APIs that the models can access are potentially vulnerable to exploit.

The last thing you would want to do is open up all of your online accounts, email, services, etc., to an LLM, but that is exactly what personal AI-assistant agents like OpenClaw do. There are currently 156 security advisories for OpenClaw.

The Detrimental Human Side Effects

There are additional negative side effects that aren’t within code, but within the humans using AI. Tasks that you no longer perform, you become worse at. This is well known, but this may be the first time we are attempting to delegate thinking itself.

The complex interaction between people using AI may not work out the way company executives plan as well. A post here suggests that AI use doesn’t always go as planned.

And why should we expect otherwise? AI is causing a crisis in learning institutions, where students are leveraging AI as a cheat machine; people use AI online to pretend to be artists, others pretend to be writers. It has become the go-to tool for pretense and deception.

These same behaviors will definitely permeate the workplace as well. The damages done won’t only be from AI hallucinations, but also from the negative incentives that will tempt many humans using it. How many businesses will fail because the employees figured out how to fake their work using AI?

What’s Next?

While everyone else is attempting to train AI to be better at writing code, a new language is attempting to come at this from the other direction. MoonBit is a new language that is being designed specifically to be optimal for AI.

MoonBit incorporates all the lessons learned from current challenges of LLM code writing to produce a language and tools that assist specifically with the verifier-loop pattern we have discussed previously.

Future useful patterns for AI will likely follow these patterns for other problem areas as well. However, these techniques are only useful in formal domains, as we must have a way to automatically verifier the LLM output with some ground truth. Everything else remains at the mercy of LLM hallucinations.

What Does It All Mean?

Somewhere between all these factors is some useful utility. However, it still remains difficult to quantify, as the tradeoffs are challenging to measure, as time lost using AI is rarely captured.

There are a multitude of factors that can be detrimental to progress. These include failures of the LLMs themselves and their tooling, as well as human factors such as the cognitive burdens of micromanaging LLM tasks, decaying skills due to offloading to AI, and competitive pressures that may incentivize using AI simply to cheat in order to just check the boxes for work done.

All the companies betting on order-of-magnitude efficiency increases are not going to see them. The fine print is simply too massive. There are many pitfalls and limitations to productivity gains using AI for coding. Yes, there will be cases that make headlines, such as Next.js, but these won’t be common wins. Next.js was the only large project that produced a useable codebase; the browser experiment and C compiler were just overhyped experiments.

If the AI cannot tell you what it is good at, then the corollary is that you don’t know what you need to be good at. You don’t know where to invest your time. You don’t know what to plan for and neither does your business. AI induces greater uncertainty in decision making.

What Does It Do Well?

AI sufficiently accelerates a lot of throw away coding, the type of tasks you write scripts for and never need again. I’ve found it very beneficial here for a number of small personal tasks and utilities.

Thanks to verifier loops with coding harnesses, we have made significant progress toward something that has potential for being a productive tool for broader development work. Costs of tasks are unpredictable and often can be very high for trivial work, but the velocity of efficiency gains is also high, and inference costs are likely to continue dropping.

No benchmark or guide can provide much assistance in evaluating if AI will be successful for a particular task. Here’s my best heuristic, which is still nothing more than an inaccurate guess:

1. Utilize languages, libraries, and tools with lots of training data, meaning they are popular.

2. Smaller tasks with lower complexity work better.

3. Coding harnesses like OpenCode are essential for anything that is not absolutely trivial.

4. Construct tasks that can be easily verified. Test cases substantially help here. This is what provided the means for the successful port of Next.js.

5. You must be knowledgeable and experienced within the project domain for any serious project. LLMs need constant micromanagement and you will not get far if you both are lost about what to do.

AI cannot automatically solve the problems that you do not understand, but it will make you think you can.

Hollywood Will Not Be Replaced by Your Text Prompt

It seems every week there is another “It’s over, this changes everything, Hollywood is cooked” statement being promoted by some AI influencer. Most everyone who looks at the current capability objectively perceives this as nothing more than hype. But will it remain hype forever? At some point, will AI provide the capability to make a full movie from a mere prompt?

Prompt to Movie Is Not a Useful Workflow

The workflow that people imagine will never work for professional film. A prompt straight to film is never going to work. People will say they want longer video generation; however, that means significantly longer wait times, only to discover hallucination errors. Who wants to wait hours for 10 minutes of generated video, only to then find it contains hallucinations and diverged significantly from the vision you had in mind?

Longer Video Generation Makes The Problems Worse

Handling problems with generative AI is made significantly worse with longer video generation. The only workable video will remain short clips, because it is the only thing you can iterate over many instances to get something workable. The Coca-Cola Christmas ad required 70,000 generations for a 60-second ad that people still thought was awful.

Therefore, it will likely mainly remain an assistive tool, at best, for a very long time, still requiring professional editing. Only the very lowest, low-budget B-movies will likely use any significant amount of AI-generated content as-is, if any. Nearly all prompt-straight-to-video-and-publish generations will be limited to social media engagement farming and TikTok like ad shorts.

But What if the Generations Become Very Fast?

Let’s assume AI becomes so efficient that you can create a full movie from a prompt instantly. However, we still cannot separate ourselves from unsolvable problems like hallucinations.

This means you must watch 2 hours of content to preview the output. This is still an untenable workflow. The longer the generated output, the longer is the review and re-generate cycle. A full movie is an enormous window of opportunity for generated randomness. It simply won’t be possible for it to ever closely match what you envision it to be.

Polanyi’s Paradox: The Limits of the Prompt Input

There is only so much context that can be expressed in a prompt. Polanyi’s Paradox is the concept that it is impossible to express in words the full fidelity of our thoughts, ideas, and visions. We can demonstrate this with nothing more than a simple hand drawn line.

The line above, although simple, contains many unique curves that would be extremely difficult to express in written language sufficiently for someone else to redraw a replica by only reading the description. However, drawing a replica from the visual reference would be quite easy.

That line symbolically is representative of your vision, and AI simply can do little to help you manifest it. Great tools assist you in such way as to allow your creations to have greater alignment with your vision. AI “assists” you in such way that what you create aligns to the visions of someone else.

A mere text prompt to movie could never align well with whatever is envisioned within one’s mind. Furthermore, all of the empty voids of things not defined will be filled in with the average of whatever the models are trained on, which means the output is mostly randomized permutations of the most common content that already exists.

There Is No Shortcut to Manifesting Your Vision

Words are not our thoughts, but are merely low-fidelity abstractions of the processes that are within our minds. It takes time to manifest our visions from our thoughts using all the modalities available. There are no shortcuts that preserve the precise intent of our ideas.

The degree to which a creation represents the creator’s ideas is a function of the time invested and the amount of control provided to the creator in relation to the output.

Therefore, you still need tools or methods which provide precision and direct control where intention is aligned to the result. The more likely future evolution is going to be AI tools with vastly improved control over the output. We are seeing some of this manifest already as controllable avatars like those provided by Higgsfield.

The merger of more direct human control over the output will make the AI output have less of that distinct “AI feel.” Somewhat ironically, AI video creation is in search of the very things we already had prior, which is fully human, authentic created content. Higher quality AI production will paradoxically mean less AI utilization.

Future tooling will likely be a hybrid of deterministic tools that might design sets, avatars, skins, and human manual directed action, augmented by AI for the final visual rendering.

Easy Production Does Not Make Success Easy

Nonetheless, once we can produce long video from a prompt, we will get the flood of AI spam just like we have with blogs and images today. So everyone claiming that the big studios are dead still lose out, as they will be completely drowned beneath all the AI-generated noise. Millions of new films a day, and nobody will want to watch any of it, because you don’t want to waste hours of your life on what may be nothing but slop.

So, you will still only watch films created by studios with a reputation for good film. Random people throwing prompts on the wall aren’t going to disrupt Hollywood. But they will make it harder to find good indie films, which will be masked under too much generated noise for anyone to sort through. This is exactly the pattern we already see happening now with music, so this isn’t a totally speculative scenario.

AI Gets Better, but Public Doubt Increases

The public is also beginning to perceive these limitations. Despite the quality of AI rendering improving, the trend is increasing doubt for direct prompt to movie becoming a reality anytime soon.

The Human Equation

Finally, actors as well as all other contributing artisans, aren’t merely puppets. They are themselves intelligent, creative entities that contribute to the greater creation of a piece of work. I suspect something more will be lost when we lose humans collaborating with other humans to make great works of art. Each individual contributes something unique that is not possible with statistical machines.

2026 Updated Perspectives on AI

Last year I summarized my AI perspectives here. Not too many things have changes since. The nefarious uses of AI and the effects are more pronounced, and concrete beneficial uses remain in the minority against the onslaught of AI slop.

2026 AI Perspectives That Are Mostly the Same

1. Alignment is impossible. Not difficult, impossible. This is the position I started with and where I still confidently remain.

2. None of the AI Labs are building AGI. They don't know how. It is hype.
   My position is the same here, but only more confidently so.

   1. In 2025, I wrote “We Have Made No Progress Toward AGI”, which confidently establishes AI is not intelligent by any means.

   2. I followed up addressing some criticisms in “Intelligence Is Not Pattern-Matching”. This post goes into more depth explaining the difference between human intelligence and the pattern-matching found in AI.

   3. Despite all the benchmark “advancements”, there is still no intelligence behind the machines. We are just increasing the pattern-matching resolution. This has some valuable uses, but it is certainly not the genius discovery machine they claim.

3. X-risk from AGI/ASI is absolute, provided that we can build it. My position here is unchanged; however, we can leave it in the category of science fiction for now, as we are no where close to achieving it, nor do we have any idea how to accomplish this task.

   1. Nonetheless, we should continue to articulate why we shouldn’t build it, in case someone figures it out eventually.

   2. All claims of AGI/ASI happening currently are hype, fear-mongering, or derive from significant misunderstandings and anthropomorphism of this technology.

4. The current true risk of AI is The Cartesian Crisis, Dead Internet, war, manipulated social behaviors, and surveillance state dystopias.
   Same concerns I started with, but are more apparent now.

   1. This is the real threat and is the thing that is actually happening. Authoritarian control and social manipulation.

   2. The bots have almost destroyed social media. It is looking quite dismal at the moment for human communication.

5. It is pointless to be principally opposed to all AI. Despite all the nefarious uses there are beneficial uses even if significantly overhyped.

6. The productive uses still don’t justify the costs. All of the service providers are still subsidizing the costs to gain users. There are no profits. At some point they will have to charge and most people aren’t going to pay hundreds of dollars a month to post fake memes on social media all day.

7. I don't live in fear of AI despite the concerns. We witnessed how fear itself is so destructive during the period of 2020/21. People lose their sanity. We won't find the best course of actions in a state of fear; it doesn't help.
   The intent of my message is mostly "informed consent of the future". Do with that as you will.

2026 Perspectives New or Modified

1. AI art, music, and creativity: Although I’ve mentioned this prior, the conformity effect is impossible to ignore now. Everything AI has an “AI feel” to it. There is now enough AI content being consumed by people that it is changing their perspectives and how they talk to each other.

   1. The abuse of Studio Ghibli’s IP set the stage for 2025. They will take all the niche things you love and mass produce them until you are sick of seeing it.

   2. People begin to talk like AI. Empirical evidence of Large Language Model’s

      influence on human spoken communication. Our language and culture is being influenced by the machines.

   3. AI takes the signals we often use to find things of interest and then blasts them on automatic repeat. It is why there are now millions of posts of the template “It is not … but …”. The problem is that when all such signals are saturated, we lose our ability to quickly sort through the noise to find the things of meaning and value.

2. AI Coding is now useful: This is probably my most significant shift in perspective. A year ago I found AI coding to still be utterly useless. However, there has been a significant shift in capability, due mostly to coding harnesses like Opencode, which allow looping in formal domains to somewhat brute-force progress until goal completion.
   Note, when I say “useful”, there is a lot of fine print behind that statement. It still cannot do what the AI labs claim. Nonetheless, the difference from last year is notable in a way that makes it useful in a narrow context.

3. Bots, bots, bots … The proliferation of bots across the internet is now strikingly apparent. It is now so pervasive that a significant amount of anti-AI content is itself written by AI bots. This includes social media posts as well as blog posts.

   1. For example, this is one such post on X, in which the entire thread is AI-generated. The thread links a Google article that turns out to also be fully AI-generated. It has quotes from executives at Google that also are AI-generated, and the document even suggests that you can listen to an AI-generated audio version of the article if you like.

   2. At this point, we are now witnessing bots criticizing other AI bots, trying to steal other bots’ business, it seems. The Google article is mostly a sales pitch for Google's AI business.

   3. And what happens when you let the bots loose, like the Moltbook AI Reddit site? You get conformity as there is no true creativity from machines.

The Perspective That Matters

Ultimately, I believe the most important and concerning concept we face from all the above is summarized in this principle: “Any technology that interferes with normal human socialization is likely a long-term net negative for civilization.” Presently, I do not believe the benefits of current AI outweigh the costs. I would gladly give them up in exchange for a return to greater societal authenticity.

There Is Hope: AI Filtering and Pangram

As the term “AI slop” becomes a term more widely discussed, hopefully we reach a tipping point where there is broad cultural rejection. We are starting to see possibly the emergence of better tools to fight against the “slop machines”. Pangram is a new AI detection tool boasting significantly higher accuracy rates than anything prior.

Music streaming services are both filtering and labeling AI content. Now, Pangram is bringing higher-quality detection to text. Hopefully, social media platforms will start feeling the pressure to filter or label AI content as well. Previously, text detection tools haven’t had high enough reliability to be very useful, but Pangram shows promise where others have failed.

The majority vote of expert humans ties Pangram Humanizers for highest overall TPR (99.3) without any false positives, while substantially outperforming all other detectors.

But tools will not matter if society simply accepts the sloppification of all of our knowledge, institutions, and means of communication. If we don’t culturally embrace authenticity again, none of this will matter.

Help !! Social Media Has Banned Mind Prison

I don’t think I know of any other example in my life of in which I’ve spent a lot of time on something and got worse at continuously. But when it comes to having a social media presence, that is exactly what has happened. I know I’m not alone here, and probably some of you have experienced something similar.

Nonetheless, it is at the point now where I simply must stop. I have no more energy for this and have no more time I can afford to invest. TikTok was the last platform where I had visibility, and they recently killed my account. No matter what I post, it gets zero views by distribution; they only rise above zero after some time due to incidental bot traffic.

I have received no strikes, penalties, or such from the platform. I raised a support ticket for the problem and they deleted it without comment.

Just prior to this, my Instagram account was permanently suspended again, and my Meta Threads account was also suspended. No reasons were given. Losing Threads was disappointing, as there was a very significant growing community of AI conversations happening there, more than anywhere else I’ve seen. But now I’m excluded.

My Facebook page, that once could get more than a hundred interactions on a post, now typically gets zero. It is also mostly the same for X and Substack Notes here as well. I have no visibility, no reach.

Many would think in our censorial world, I’m being censored for this or that viewpoint. While that might be possible, it also makes no sense. There are plenty of accounts with uninhibited reach on all these platforms that post similar content. Furthermore, there are many accounts that push much harder against permissible limits and still don’t have issues. I honestly have no answers here, I’m just observing.

Nonetheless, after sinking hundreds of hours into these platforms over several years, I simply cannot do this anymore. Without any reach of my own, it requires hours of scouring the networks for others having conversations on topics of interest and attempting to be part of what others are talking about. It is tiring and frustrating as you cannot drive the conversations you want to drive.

Furthermore, none of that activity has resulted in any increase in reach for my own posts. Conversely, my reach has only declined. Despite each algorithm update on X and Substack Notes claiming it will help small accounts, my visibility only continues to diminish. Finally, to add further insult to injury, I find myself losing out to the bots or others who use AI to write their posts and replies.

It is unfortunate, as conversations significantly helped provide deeper insight for topics I write here, and social media was the only method to reach new people, so that they might find my website. AI is now killing SEO for information search, which makes it more difficult for anyone to find my site through search.

What Happens Next?

I don’t know what happens next. I really don’t know the words to write here. If I could just walk away from the internet at this point I probably would, but that isn’t an option. Since 2020, normal employment isn’t possible, unfortunately due to health reasons.

Does this mean I will stop writing for Mind Prison? No. It means I cannot spend hundreds of hours this year on social media attempting to reach people as that takes significant time away from what I could invest here or on other productive goals. I hope some of you will help me do what it seems I cannot, and that is spread articles that you may find interesting to others.

Brian Jenney on Professional Vibe Coding

Here is Brian Jenney discussing his experience attempting professional AI vibe coding at his company. Note how it initially appeared to be working well. This is why this technology is so difficult to comprehend: it deceptively looks very impressive until it fails.

There are no doubt many grifters in this space, but also many true believers, due to AI’s impressive mirage of capability. Listen to Brian explain his recent experience at a company attempting to vibe code a real product.

“This whole you can do more with less because of AI thing is a ridiculous myth. When I joined this most recent team, it was basically me and a data scientist. We were told to move really fast, use AI, we’re going to basically vibe code this whole thing from scratch and it kind of worked actually.

To be completely honest, we had a prototype that looked pretty damn cool and it really did feel magical. It felt almost like we could probably build this over a few weeks if we really put our minds to it and maybe the tools really are that good. I honestly started to feel a lot less secure in my role as a developer.

I thought, “Man, maybe I was wrong. Maybe the tools really are so good that we are going to be replaced.” It took around six weeks or so, maybe a little bit less for that honeymoon to end.

When we went from prototype into something in production, meaning something that we had in a demo environment to something that we actually wanted to show people or use that had some real value and real functionality, it became immediately clear that this was not going to work.

The idea of vibe coding was essentially that you would prompt the AI, it would do the thing, you’d kind of make sure it kind of worked and you’d move on. At some point, we basically had to rip this apart and start from scratch.

Now, the AI tools did give us a very good baseline to start from, but if we just kept going down this path, we would have slowed down tremendously. Now back to that AI productivity myth. AI made us slower, not faster.

Now this really confused me and I kind of didn’t want to believe it or I thought maybe I’m just jaded or maybe I’m trying to find a reason not to use AI or something like that. Maybe I just need to be aware of my own biases and just accept the fact that AI is the best thing since sliced bread and we will use it and we will love it.

And I’m sure some of you are hearing this and you’re thinking, “Oh, you know, you just have a skills issue or you should have used this model.” I hate when people say that. I’m on a team of pretty smart people. These people are much more senior than me.

Some of them have been writing code for decades. Some of them really, really bright people. Here’s the thing, we generated a lot of code with AI and maybe this was our mistake. Because we were moving so fast, we had to generate a ton of code with AI.

Now at some point, you can’t fully understand what the code is doing, why it’s there, why is it so verbose, why are there 10 readme’s here. It’s just, it’s not meant for human consumption. Things were breaking constantly and we were just moving too fast.

The idea of just having AI take these prompts or even really detailed specs, we have these rules documents and all the things that we tried to tame the AI just didn’t work.

We were really trying to vibe code our way into a production app and what we saw eventually is that the number of errors that we were getting back and the number of broken things that were coming back, even with test cases, even with all these other guardrails, even with specs, all these things, they were just ultimately slowing us down.” — Brian Jenney

A Note on Making This Clip and Vibe Coding

I edited the clip above in Davinci Resolve and used it to create the subtitles. I wanted to extract a plain transcript text from the subtitle file, so this was an opportunity for a quick vibe coding experiment of my own.

Vibe Coding Golang Success

My first attempt was with the new Gemini 3 Flash. I gave it the following prompt: “Create a Golang file that parses a TTML file and creates an output of only the raw transcript text.” Gemini 3 created a Go file that successfully compiled and worked without error. Note: this is very simple code, at only about 70 lines. This is not a hard problem.

This result is a win for time saved. A one-line prompt to 70 lines of output that works is an excellent ratio. Yaaaaay, I’m a 70x engineer!

Vibe Coding Zig Fail

Next, I attempted to make a Zig version of the Golang application. Golang is a well-known popular language, but Zig is much newer, with less data for the AI training.

I attempted to create a working application with Gemini 3 Flash, Gemini 3 Pro, Claude Opus 4.5, ChatGPT 5.2, and Grok 4.1. None of them created a source file that would even compile. All attempts were failures. Now I’m a 0x engineer!

When Vibe Coding Works and When It Doesn’t

AI is an imperfect simulator of data patterns. The more data, the better the simulation will be. All tasks are highly data-constrained. What this means is that AI can be a productivity enhancer for specifically the things that have already been done millions of times.

If you are using a popular language, popular libraries, and attempting a task that is likely common and has already been done many times before, AI might be able to do it. However, if any of those components are niche, it becomes increasingly unlikely that AI will succeed.

What becomes significantly problematic is that AI has no self-reflection. It does not know what it is good at. It cannot perceive its own knowledge and capabilities. Therefore, when a task is failing you have no idea whether the AI simply can never perform that task or if another hour of prompt tweaking will finally yield a result.

The result of this is often more time lost than time saved when all is accounted for, as described by Brian Jenney above. There is no method of reliable guidance to know what to use the AI for that will be successful, other than the simple heuristic of common knowledge and tasks.

Ironically, this is the least valuable of all the tasks we want AI to perform. It is not going to solve the revolutionary problems. At best, it can somewhat unreliably automate the most common things, but that is never going to justify billions to trillions of dollars in investment capital.

Conformity as a Side Effect

Importantly and often not discussed, this incentivizes locking us into conformity with whatever is the most popular. Since AI is only somewhat good at tasks based on common knowledge, that is what you will use it for if you want to be most productive. The gap between the productivity of common languages and new, niche things widens. The effort required to use alternative and new technologies increases in comparison.

The AI usefulness bell curve creates a usage bias toward the best capabilities, which are just a reflection of the availability of data. The more we use it, the more everything gravitates toward the same patterns.

Grokipedia - The Largest AI-Generated Information Experiment

Grokipedia, an AI alternative to Wikipedia, was just launched on October 27, 2025. Its goals, as stated by Elon Musk, are to “create an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge”, “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”, and “exceed Wikipedia by several orders of magnitude in breadth, depth and accuracy.”

This is the largest AI experiment to date for attempting to generate useful, quality information at a massive scale. At launch, Grokipedia has over 800,000 topic articles. This experiment is a great test that should give us a signal as to whether AI can actually perform something that is not merely generating AI-slop blog articles to game SEO or engagement-bait marketing.

If successful, it will likely mark a pivot point where we have a first large-scale beneficial use of AI for information collection, organization, and analysis. However, exactly how will we know if it is operating as intended?

How Accurate is Grokipedia and How Would We Ever Know?

The most important question is whether or not Grokipedia is filled with hard-to-detect hallucinations - the Achilles’ heel of AI for nearly all automation tasks. Grokipedia was created using 100% AI automation with no humans in the loop for review.

This makes Grokipedia an excellent benchmark for the viability of fully automated information processing. So how does it look?

Example: Grokipedia Incorrectly Cites Mind Prison’s AI Alignment Article

Grokipedia’s AI alignment topic references my own AI alignment essay about the impossibility of achieving successful alignment. However, it makes a mistake. It conflates two separate topics within my essay and relates them in a way I did not express.

It is a subtle error that likely nobody would ever perceive, except for the author of the original text, as the text sounds completely reasonable. The incorrect interpretation is in the statement about Goodhart’s law and mathematics - that is an association the AI created.

Example: Grokipedia Incorrectly Links Separate Hallucination Concepts

Grokipedia’s topic on hallucination also contains an incorrect statement, where two distinctly separate concepts are stated to be related to each other.

Citation #38, something I have written about before, is not related to Citation #2. This relationship was made up by the AI.

Impossible to Perceive Errors

The previous two examples would never be noticed by anyone except the original authors or domain experts. The alignment topic is over 11,000 words and 200 citations. The hallucination topic is over 6,000 words and about 100 citations. I did not verify any other content within these topics. I only spot-checked something I was familiar with.

So, how many errors in total do these topics have? How many errors does the entire Grokipedia have? Who has the bandwidth to check? These articles are long, technical, and contain hundreds of citations to long, technical papers. This would likely amount to hundreds of hours of work by domain experts to verify only these two topics.

Results Will Be Dependent on How Popular Is the Topic

We know the nature of AI as a probabilistic tool. Subjects with large amounts of data that is largely consistent will generally have high degrees of accuracy. However, niche topics will have higher error rates.

The following are a few examples of individuals that don’t have enough public consistent data for the AI to make accurate summaries for their content.

“My Grokipedia page is far longer/more detailed than my Wikipedia page. I am flattered Grok thought me important enough for that. But it also has way more errors, even aside from overestimating my importance (e.g. - I was never a fellow at U of Michigan)” — Ilya Somin

On the other hand, there have been numerous high-profile individuals who have stated Grokipedia has a more accurate description of them than Wikipedia. However, most of these have been individuals who had strongly biased articles on Wikipedia and therefore, the bar was quite low for improvement.

How Truthful is Grokipedia?

Many are hoping that AI will be some type of truth oracle. Musk has described Grok as a “maximum truth-seeking AI”. But can AI deliver on such a promise? Truth in this context, is not about accuracy or hallucinations, but AI’s ability to perceive the “correct” answers within abstract, controversial, political, and philosophical points of view.

Here is a sampling of some topics, rewritten versus preserved, as posted by Dr. Robert Rohde on X.

A substantial amount of content was copied directly from or seeded from Wikipedia. Niche topics that were copied from Wikipedia are likely only accurate due to the fact it was a verbatim copy. We don’t know how the process decided which topics to copy verbatim and which to rewrite.

Importantly, this means that overall accuracy for Grokipedia may decline significantly if at some point it doesn’t have Wikipedia as the seed for content origination. If it attempts to construct niche topics on its own they will likely contain significantly more hallucinations.

AI Cannot Be Unbiased or Truthful

Despite our desire to have some type of unbiased truth oracle, it simply will not be possible. The hallucinating AI we have today is not capable of this task and due to the AI Bias Paradox, no AI will ever be capable of such a task.

AI does not have the ability to know truth. It can only construct representations of the data it is fed. What we call “truth”, determining correctness of contested information, can only be done by understanding, of which AI has none. Therefore, the selection of the correct representation will result from humans asserting their correct ideas of truth via specific model training, fine-tuning, or prompt instructions.

Therefore, the truthfulness of information created by AI is beholden to those who create the AI, as the AI is not an independent mind of reason seeking truth, knowledge, and wisdom.

What we should ask is, what controls the entire repository of human knowledge? We should be concerned about all knowledge being owned or controlled by a single entity. All such consolidations of central power are magnets for abuse. Even if they don’t appear to be abused initially, it is only a matter of time.

But Many Say Grokipedia Is Better

On a per topic-basis, some might be better. Some are better only because there have been dedicated efforts to make those topics on Wikipedia purposely misrepresentative of the topic. Wikipedia is unfortunately vulnerable to mob control of contested topics.

Grokipedia may be better where Wikipedia has sabotaged its own credibility on some topics, making it a very low bar for a competitor to represent that information more accurately or in a more balanced way.

Keep in mind that most of these positive reviews have come about because some individuals or topics are so poorly represented on Wikipedia that only a quick, cursory review of the same topic on Grokipedia seems substantially better.

As I demonstrated above with only a couple of paragraphs of topics I reviewed, it will take substantial time to determine the true accuracy of the content. What looks great upon cursory review might not hold up under further scrutiny.

Can You Simply Ask Grok for Edits?

Hallucinated Capabilities

In what appears to be an hallucination of capability, Grok states that it can make edits for you on Grokipedia. Grok states, “users can propose edits to Grokipedia articles directly through conversations with me. I’ll review suggestions against reliable sources and factual accuracy, approving changes that align with our commitment to truth-seeking.”

Larry Sanger requested an update to Grokipedia via Grok. However, no update ever appeared, even after Grok assured him that the update had been done. Grok claimed that users weren’t seeing it either due to caching or queuing on the backend.

So, does this capability exist or not? Well, at the moment, nobody seems to know for sure. The update still hasn’t appeared as of today, but this is the type of madness we are all going to be thrown into within a world where all services and support are done by hallucinating AI agents.

You Can Edit Within Grokipedia

Note, you can request edits directly in Grokipedia by highlighting a section of text and then selecting “Suggest Edit.” I submitted an edit for the AI hallucination topic mentioned above; however, no changes occurred to the text. I received no notification the requested change was accepted or rejected.

AI Hackapedia - All Information Is Vulnerable to Prompt Injections

LLMs cannot be secured. If Grokipedia is open to user-suggested corrections that the AI will interpret, then the AI is vulnerable to user-submitted prompt injections. There will be no solution. Within a day of Grokipedia going live, some had already discovered how to exploit user corrections for SEO hacking.

Exploits will likely become far more sophisticated and potentially even automated by adversarial AI. It will be extremely difficult to find any effective defenses without making the correction process extremely difficult, limited, or disabling it altogether.

One of the criticisms of Wikipedia was that it had become captured and exploited for ideological narratives. Beware that Grokipedia doesn’t necessarily have better defenses; it will suffer from its own hallucinations, biases in training, and vulnerabilities to manipulation by users.

AI Slopipedia - The Inevitable Destination of AI Content

If Grokipedia were to replace Wikipedia, what would become the base reference corpus? The internet would become AI feeding on AI, as surely blogs will use AI to generate blog posts from Grokipedia text.

AI can generate content at a far greater pace than humans can verify its output, and most of the content will appear correct to the majority of people who consume it. Although Grokipedia provides the capability for users to submit corrections, it is not clear that Grok, acting as a moderator, will result in better quality than Wikipedia, as Grok will likely trade one set of problems for a different set of problems.

Without intervention, hallucinations will accumulate, ultimately leading to model collapse. The necessary intervention would be humans fixing the errors manually. All of the efficiency gained from AI-generated information could potentially be lost to the maintenance costs of constantly addressing the hallucinations.

AI, in its current form, does not act as a “maximum truth-seeking” device. It is a non-deterministic probability tool. It is neither accurate nor truthful. Its greatest pitfall is that the output can sometimes be useful and sometimes not, but there is no easy way to distinguish between the two, making its use trepidatious.

Furthermore, in the hands a single centralized owner, the temptations to abuse AI for its capabilities of influence are highly concerning.

Did AI Make a Novel Cancer Drug Discovery?

Google published this announcement, “How a Gemma model helped discover a new potential cancer therapy pathway”, which has led to statements such as “This is AI generating novel science. The moment has finally arrived.”

Is this a genuine discovery by AI, or will the fine print nullify the significance?

This discovery is not an example of AI being prompted to “find a novel cancer therapy,” as some headlines might imply, and then the model thinks, reasons, and performs research to obtain the answer.

It is a complex process and pipeline that made use of LLMs. Let’s list the high-level steps performed, as described in the paper, so that we can see the fine print ourselves. The detailed steps can be found in section 4 of the paper.

Each topic heading indicates whether the step was performed by human or LLM.

1 - Experiment Architecture Design and Methods ( Human )

First and foremost, the entire experiment, setup, data, process, and execution are all planned out by humans. LLMs played no part in the planning or design of how a cancer drug might be found.

Humans supplied the architecture, data, and the proposed targets to search for or screen for the type of biological action that humans have identified as important. This was all done by human intelligence.

2 - Gemma Model Pretraining( Human )

50 million human and mouse transcriptomes from public data atlases and other related papers and information are used to train a Gemma base model 27B LLM for textual representations of “cell sentences,” which are genes ranked by their expression level.

3 - Gemma Model Fine-Tuning( Human )

Supervised fine-tuning was used to predict gene-expression profiles. GRPO was then used to optimize the prediction of key gene programs. This specially trained model is designated C2S-Scale.

4 - Dataset Selection and Preprocessing( LLM + Human )

A selection of drugs to test was derived from the L1000 resource which has over 30,000 compounds. This set was filtered using GTP-o3 to predict commercial availability of the compound. This step produced a library of 4,266 drugs to be used in the perturbation test.

5 - Perturbation Inference( LLM + Human )

The LLM is prompted by humans to make the candidate predictions. The LLM produced ~886 predictions per drug (486 in positive context + 400 in neutral), totaling about 4 million predictions across 4,266 drugs.

This step produces a list of drug candidate interactions. These are all probabilistic results based on the specialized training and data. The LLM is not creating results from an understanding of the science or research, but from pattern associations it can find in the data.

6 - Scoring of Predictions( Machine Analysis )

The data from the LLM perturbation inference is scored by a computer algorithm, ssGSEA, in order to have a ranking of the results. This is necessary because the LLM is not able to determine which candidates have the highest biological activity.

7 - Candidate Selection ( Human )

Humans then manually inspect the top-ranked results for novelty, looking for results that aren’t already known.

8 - Hypothesis Formulation( Human )

The method of biological action is hypothesized by humans, given what is the known characteristics of the candidate and their biological understanding.

9 - Verification of Potential( Human )

In the lab, in vitro cell testing is performed to verify biological action of the candidate. Note that, for any drug discovery, lab tests are still very early and preliminary results. Thousands of potential discoveries never become useful in practice, as either they don’t have the same action within the body or they have undesirable other effects.

AI or Human Discovery?

It is important to note that the LLM did not invent or theorize a method to discover potential drug candidates. The entire construction of the experiment was imagined and executed by humans.

LLMs were used to probabilistically narrow a set of potential candidates to a manageable set that could be inspected by human review. This is a substantial productivity enhancement for this type of task; however, it is not an accomplishment performed by thinking machines; it does not advance AI in any way toward something we would call AGI. Humans posses reasoning capability that is still not present in any current AI system.

Nonetheless, this is a far better use of AI, training on datasets intended to be used for research, and performing some narrow, defined tasks, versus much of the current public use of AI to fill the internet with hallucinated noise, to the suffering of us all.

I Could Have Lived Without AI

Is it true that every invention and technology has been a net positive for civilization, or is it only perceived that way because we forget what we have lost along the way?

Any technology that interferes with normal human socialization is likely a long-term net negative for civilization. Much has already been written about the detrimental effects of social media, but what if we created a technology that substantially increased that negative potential a hundredfold?

Importantly, what if all the promises of that technology were mostly lies, misconceptions, and hype from a horde of companies and influencers pulling off one of the largest economic heists in history?

In the end, we are left with an internet littered with hallucinated information, a public manipulated by hordes of sophisticated bots, the devaluation of all the unique things we loved through mass-produced automation until we despise seeing them, everything you create is fed to the machines so the machines can mimic it and serve it to everyone else, a dead internet is the crown jewel of the era of inauthenticity in which those starving for human connection game the system with more AI to obtain attention, and the promises for AGI, UBI, and abundant miracle cures for your failing health were merely deceptions to keep the money flowing to the machines and those who build them.

The Human Hallucinations - AI is Intelligent

What if the hallucinations that matter aren’t those from the AI, but the humans who are hallucinating that AI is intelligent, conscious, creative, or even competent at what it does?

How valuable is a technology that does nothing it claims, but convinces its users otherwise? AI continually demonstrates that it is very capable of influencing our beliefs. The error in the system might not lie within AI at all, but rather we have inadvertently exploited the human vulnerability of anthropomorphism bias.

Could it be that even those who honestly believe they are benefitting from AI are hallucinating their gains? Some have discovered that this is the case:

“I was an early adopter of AI coding and a fan until maybe two months ago, when I read the METR study and suddenly got serious doubts. In that study, the authors discovered that developers were unreliable narrators of their own productivity. They thought AI was making them 20% faster, but it was actually making them 19% slower.”

Fortunately Humans Can Overcome Their Hallucinations

But the hallucinations won’t last forever as they are beginning to crumble:

In 2024, scientists surveyed said they believed AI was already surpassing human abilities in over half of all use cases. In 2025, that belief dropped off a cliff, falling to less than a third.

These findings follow previous research which concluded that the more people learn about how AI works, the less they trust it. The opposite was also true — AI’s biggest fanboys tended to be those who understood the least about the tech.”

What AI Coding Is Actually Like

And despite all those proclamations that companies are now writing the majority of their code with AI, CJ Reynolds gives us a more realistic view. In a recent video, CJ stated:

“I used to enjoy programming. Now, my days are typically spent going back and forth with an LLM and pretty often yelling at it or telling it that it’s doing the wrong thing and getting mad that it didn’t do what I asked it to, to begin with.”

“…people chalk it up to skill issue, but I’ve worked with it long enough and tried it long enough that um I’m, I’m kind of done…”

AI Coding Sucks

There were nearly 3,000 comments on CJ’s video. I encourage you to read them if you are still hallucinating that LLMs are PhD-level coding geniuses. The following comment from the video is quite telling:

“It’s so validating to hear someone else talk about this. I’ve felt crazy.”

This is the kind of comment you see when people are being heavily gaslit. Their own experience doesn’t match the narratives of the multi-billion-dollar hype machines. Still not convinced? The following is a humorous but highly informative example of AI coding demonstrated by a live coding challenge.

What if we could create the perfect deceptive technology, a technology that can present a masterful illusion of capability so convincing that it captures trillions of dollars from the technology space?

The perfect demo machine that can demonstrate nearly any potential feature imaginable so well that it sells itself not on what it can do, but mostly on what it might do, but in reality never does.

The Gambler’s Addiction

What if we cannot let go of this technology because it is so ideal at showing almost exactly what we want? It plays on our feelings of being so close to a goal. Just another spin of the wheel, roll of the dice, it just might deliver this time. Such little effort for the potential of massive rewards. Just tweaking a few words of the prompt might save me hours, days, or weeks of time.

And then, something works, the slot machine pays out a reward and we are caught in momentary amazement that a few words in a prompt yielded some impressive result. But just as the gambler is unable to perceive the slow-burn of their money into the machines that will systematically take it all, we slow-burn our time into the AI slot machines and forget it all when something works.

The AI Emperors Have No Clothes

If you are posting AI-generated images, are you the artist?
If you are posting AI-generated video, are you the creator, director, or effects artist?
If you are posting AI-generated papers, are you the scientist or researcher?
If you are posting AI-generated stories, are you the writer?
If you are posting AI-generated music, are you the musician?
If you are posting AI-generated noise, are you adding value or dumping digital litter all over the internet.

Nobody looks upon the prompter with a curious interest in their impressive skill or capability. They are the unwitting salesman demonstrating the product. The onlookers are just interested in the product.

The primary “art” of posting AI-generated content is the art of maximum attention-seeking. It is the use of this “tool” for its absolute worst characteristics - filling the world with noise that makes it harder for the rest of us to find the things of real value.

Prompt engineering was a label given to a tedious exercise of exploration and documenting behaviors to give it more prominence, due to the fact that entering a prompt and getting a result is a low-skill activity that deserves no recognition on its own.

The following chart from “Workslop is the new busywork. And it’s costing millions” is a survey showing the negative perceptions as seen by those having to deal with AI-generated content in the workplace from colleagues.

The Contamination Cannot Be Contained or Fixed

If we don’t stop this race to the bottom, we will shred all remnants of authenticity, and all of our institutions of information are going to become contaminated with hallucinated content. Only a broad cultural desire for a return to authenticity will hold the monster at bay.

And we can’t use AI to fix this. This is a runaway train, and when it goes off the rails, we have to manually pick up the pieces and sort through the debris. There is no reliable method to detect and remove or filter all AI-generated content.

Civilization had an era named the Enlightenment. This era will be named the Dimwit Era. It will be stated that fools seeking intelligence destroyed their own.

The Attention Economy - Gaze Into the Machine Until Your Mind Is Blind

Modern society wants your attention to feed the machines, to feed the algorithms, and to extract every possible second of gaze from your eyes until your mind is zombified, unable to think or look away.

They want you to forget the world of meaning, where subtle nuance is important, where deep thoughts take time but transform your world, where imagination blooms not within the noise of constant digital stimulation but within the silence of nothing. — Make Authenticity Great Again

The increasing levels of stimulating content reach levels of complete saturation, until we can no longer distinguish things of value and meaning. It is all at maximum volume. All of the digital screens are shouting into your eyes, saying “pay attention to me.”

It is all just illusions that capture your valuable time and leave you with nothing in return. There is no intelligence or creativity in the machines. They are just probability-optimized attention traps, creating hordes of paying zombies for the mega-corp AI empire.

Addiction Is the Unstated Goal

And there are no limits to what the AI labs will reach for in order to sustain their empire. We are all subject to being sacrificed to the machines, even our children.

And we have the recent announcement from OpenAI that ChatGPT will now start providing adult content to users. Sam Altman posted “…we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

Sycophancy is rampant in these models. A convenient feature enticing its users to keep using the product.

The Societal Cost - AI Slop is Expensive

The damage doesn’t simply consist of the AI litter being produced. The economic implosion will be massive without a miracle landing in the hands of the AI labs. Headlines such as “The AI bubble is 17 times the size of the dot-com frenzy — and four times the subprime bubble” are acknowledging that there is an impending economic doom-level event nearing.

Some of the researchers perceive it too and realize that there is no saving the ship without delivering the miracle they promised but never knew how to build, and still don’t. But keep sending them your money, because maybe they will figure it out, and their jobs and wealth need to be saved, not yours.

Microsoft just withdrew its proposal for aa AI data center in a Milwaukee after community concerns about the impacts on the local area. Electricity costs are increasing by as much as 267 percent for everyone near these AI data centers. People are paying the extra costs even without using AI.

In addition to massive energy resources, AI also requires a massive amount of water for cooling the data centers, which is another stressor for local communities.

Indiscernible Reality - The Cost Is Madness

And what is the cost to our sanity? AI does not actually need to be perfect in order to be substantially disruptive. It just needs to be good enough to create doubt, and that doubt will cost you.

Since you cannot always immediately tell whether an image or video is real, every post demands more time of your attention to discern. It doesn’t matter that it is still possible to discern most of the time, because this becomes exhausting, as nobody has the time to scrutinize everything.

You just become sick of it all, including the things that are real because you don’t want to spend the time to figure it out. It is now affecting everyone’s behavior. Some are being misled by fake AI content, while others become distrustful of real content, which means we become distrustful of each other as a society. This path does not lead to good destinations. Our compass is broken, and we are unable to find our heading to navigate to things of meaning and value.

Does Technology Always Benefit Society?

So, what of the argument that all technology eventually becomes a net benefit? Although there are numerous examples of concerning technologies that later became accepted as beneficial, technologies sometimes do fail, and their investments and adoptions become total losses.

Recent Technology Failures

Some recent struggles of technology can be seen in Apple Vision, 3D TVs, Metaverse, and NFTs. Each had a time when headlines were embracing their arrival. A technology that cannot prove and sustain a long-term need and benefit will eventually collapse, no matter how much initial hype and funding it generates.

Technology That Survives Is Still Not Guaranteed Beneficial

But what if the true state of our existence is obscured by the technologies we have already adopted, such that we are in no state of mind to properly self-assess our progress? For example, the study “Blocking mobile internet on smartphones improves sustained attention, mental health, and subjective well-being” might imply that our perceptions are not able to accurately assess the detriments we have incurred as our reasoning ability may be impaired.

The Hidden Costs May Be Substantial and Undiscovered for Years

This is the case of hidden costs that can persists for years, maybe decades. We know that such hidden costs exist in realms such as pharmaceuticals, where drugs may be pulled from the market many years later, after widespread adoption, and the harm of millions of consumers. And we are still trying to assess the costs incurred by social media, as many would debate whether it is a net benefit in its current state.

And where would we expect to find high hidden costs? Most likely, a technology that is sufficiently deceptive in nature would be substantially inclined to have large hidden costs. A machine designed to mimic intelligence, creativity, knowledge, and skill, while simultaneously projecting a human-like personality in order to further elicit anthropomorphism from its users, is a machine highly qualified for deceptive capabilities unlike anything else ever built.

Do We Know and Will We Know What Is Lost?

As we become more dependent on technology that “thinks” for us, our ability to think for ourselves diminishes, as does any capability we no longer perform and outsource to something else. How could we ever fully grasp what technology has done to us if we surrender the only capability that would allow us to know? Our ability to think.

In such a case, it may become true that we will never know what we have lost, as we have lost the ability to perceive it, either because our technology presents such marvelous illusions or our minds have become too weak to reason about our place in the world.

Disproportionate Harm Versus Benefit

AI does excel at tasks that don’t require precision - tasks that are not inhibited by hallucinations. Unfortunately, that includes many examples such as “Mystery Hacker Used AI To Automate ‘Unprecedented’ Cybercrime Rampage.”

The following graphic illustrates the most important concept to grasp in regards to the debate over the overall impacts of AI: that productive use is bandwidth limited by human review, and nefarious use scales to the limits of compute.

Hallucinations are not a solvable problem, and that means any output, no matter how trivial, must be verified to be accurate. In most cases, this requires a manual human review. However, creating thousands of bot accounts for engagement farming does not necessitate accurate information.

And we have no way to assess what the future harms will be. What will ultimately be the cumulative effect of a new generation that has been molded by AI from birth?

The AI Cheating Epidemic

The Counterargument - None of These Are New Problems

What should we make of the argument that AI has introduced no new problems into the world, as they all already existed prior and therefore we were apparently dealing with them fine?

This is somewhat true, but a pre-existing condition does not imply that the current condition is not worse than before. Scale matters substantially. Otherwise, it is like saying, “The inflation rate is up, but inflation always existed, so who cares.“

Obviously, the rate or amount of something matters and is important. Problems often reach tipping points that cause collapse. Just because inflation existed prior does not prevent runaway inflation that destroys the currency.

What AI has advanced is the mass scaling of the bad, but not the mass scaling of the good. It has the potential capability of creating runaway problems that lead to collapse, and in this case, the collapse might be societal trust, societal order, and even our sanity.

We Have Built a Trap for Ourselves

Maybe no technology is inherently bad, but it becomes a net negative when misrepresented and abused. Painkillers are helpful when used narrowly for the right problem, but are life-destroying monsters in all other cases. AI is currently being applied and promoted for all such other cases within its domain. The benefits are far narrower and more costly than is being acknowledged.

This is not an argument that AI has no productive uses. It is an argument that it has no true hype-void productive uses that justify both the investment costs and the collateral damage from the nefarious use.

Turn on a light and watch the moth circle it until death, totally forgetting its purpose, as you have hijacked its attention mechanism. This is what we are doing with technology, and AI is optimizing for it: stealing your attention until your purpose for living is lost. Violence as the Weapon to Stop Ideas

Violence is emerging as a response to conflicting points of view, and its subsequent celebration has sent distressing shockwaves throughout what remains of the civil order of a free society. A great disturbance in the force of nature that holds together civilization in a peaceful, cooperative manner.

What Is the Justified Response to Such Events?

• How should society respond?

• How does the free society defend itself without becoming just a mirror image of the monster that attacked it?

• Has war now been effectively declared, and it is time to drop all principle until the enemy is vanquished?

• Will the response prove to be the solution or a trap for the free republic?

There are calls to now respond in kind and to mirror the tactics of the ideological opponents of liberty. It is argued that this is necessary so as to not lose liberty to those who abide by no rules. In order to preserve the liberty of speech must we abandon its principle? Some say yes. But if that is the case, does that imply that to preserve the liberty of life we must also abandon our principles for the protection and value of life as well?

Karma, Retribution and Vengeance

When you have been egregiously wronged for a very long time, it should come as no surprise a tipping point will inevitably be reached where there is an escalation in response. Although it may be expected and understandable, it can easily result in a spiral of actions that do not advance forward any productive outcomes.

Emotional tunnel vision tends to restrict perceivable responses to that of reciprocating the actions of your adversary. A false assumption emerges that the choices are only between inaction or reciprocation.

The Methods Which Work Are Those Your Enemy Attacks

The answer should be somewhat apparent. What they wish to take from you is what they fear. They will attempt to intimidate you into stopping what is working.

Speech is the most powerful tool that has ever existed for changing minds. Therefore, speech will always be what they will desire for you to voluntarily surrender. Speech will inevitably sort out what is true and what is not when it is unimpeded and the participants’ goal is understanding.

Defining Cancel Culture: Speech and Consequence

Cancel culture has plagued online discourse for approximately a decade. It is seen as an attack on freedom of speech, but not by violation of law, but rather through cultural pressures to silence speech. Therefore, it has become somewhat insidious in nature, as without the defense of law, the recourse to combat such threats to speech have been frustrating.

Its proponents have argued that cancel culture is merely the consequence of one’s actions and therefore it is simply the ethical response to combat immoral speech.

The Attributes That Have Defined Cancel Culture

What is cancel culture precisely? Being a cultural phenomenon, it is often defined in whatever context achieves the outcome that the proponents or opponents desire. Nonetheless, let’s attempt to describe some attributes that are useful to define what consists of cancel culture behavior and its boundaries.

The stated intention of cancel culture: The intention to make environments safe from hostility. The intent to remove immoral and unethical ideologies from society.

The underlying motivations: Silence of ideological opposition. Grandiose moral superiority. Domination of preferred opinions. Speech is ineffective for social change. Unforgiveness of others. Speech can be a hostile act equivalent to violence.

The methods: Organized mobs pressure businesses, services, or platforms to remove accounts, products, or fire individuals for something they have stated.

This often involves misrepresenting the significance, interpretation, or context of something said. Furthermore, the “offended” mob typically represents themselves as a proxy for some other group for which they claim to have suffered offense or harm.

Therefore, the vocal mob is typically not even composed of users, consumers, or customers who have a relation with the company or service to which they are applying pressure to take some action against others.

The results, witch-hunts: It has been characterized by witch-hunt behavior. Broadening criteria so that more people can be canceled by an ever-growing list of “unacceptable” terms. Searching through years of history to find something objectionable in order to punish someone in the present for their difference of opinion.

Being a “witch-hunter” brings a level of status within the culture and feeds one’s moral superiority. Therefore, the more people you can cancel, the better. This incentivizes the spiraling effects where more and more normal, everyday behaviors become cancellable.

Since it establishes itself as a culture, it spreads throughout every facet of society, such as being written into company HR policies and government law. Everyone who wants to be perceived as “moral” will take part in order to not risk their livelihood. A society of silent thoughts, captured by the fear of thinking out loud.

The Rationalization of Cancel Culture: Consequence Culture

Can we simply term cancel culture as “consequence culture” and avoid any conflicts that might be perceived with free speech?

In order to not be perceived as being in conflict with free speech values, many have made such arguments as the following to redefine cancel culture as consequence culture when:

• Our values are correct, but theirs are not

• The context is recent, not something from the past

• The context is serious in nature, not simply use of a bad word

• The context is about moral behavior

These arguments give us no useful criteria to evaluate speech distinctly from any other speech other than being an attempted disguise for speech we don’t like. But these are the types of rationalizations that emerge when decisions are made without any principled foundation.

Cancel Culture as a Weapon, Does It Work?

Importantly, if anyone is to choose cancel culture as a method, does it yield the desired results? Does it vanquish from society those “terrible” thoughts and those who hold them?

The important question: Who has changed their values and beliefs because they were cancelled? We haven’t observed that this outcome occurs with any frequency; however, we do see that those who were cancelled often became more defiant in their views and inevitably increased their reach.

From presidents to podcasters, and many in between, we didn’t see them crumble away to irrelevance. Instead, they inevitably surged back to prominence with an ever-greater reach and influence. How could this be termed as anything but a great failure of cancel culture?

The lesser-known individuals may have been impacted to a greater extent, resulting in them becoming a growing mass of unspoken, but importantly, unbroken thoughts and ideas. They didn’t change their minds.

It bolsters the oppositional view: Cancel culture typically fails when the cancellation did not originate from the primary consumers of the content. When it is perceived as originating from an adversarial force, the long-term result is often a bolstering of the popularity and reach of the one attempted to be cancelled.

There is no evidence that this is a useful tactic to obtain the desired results of the goal. It consists of temporary victories, but is a detriment to your cause, credibility, and often serves to inevitably bolster the counter-view.

You cannot cancel something that has an audience. Changing minds is the only method that works, but it is the long game. There are no shortcuts.

The Foundational Principles That Build Cancel Culture

Speech is ineffective: The substantial structure of cancel culture rests upon the principle that speech is ineffective for social change. Speech does not change the minds of “terrible” people. Therefore, debate and argument of your position are useless tools.

Speech is violence: Furthermore, it supposes that speech itself may consist of statements or words that are equivalent to violence when assessing the harm done.

Unforgiveness: Additionally, a sibling principle is that of unforgiveness. It fuels the justification for anything said, no matter how long ago, being as relevant as if it were said today. It also explains why apologies are always ignored even if demanded. It is not about forgiveness, but about submission and humiliation.

Force is justified: From these foundational principles, we are only left with the options of force against others as a proper response, namely to silence their speech, remove them from positions of influence, or punish them until they submit.

Removing the option of speech for conflict resolution is a disastrous step toward escalating force. As we have seen in our current society, the inevitable result of any philosophy built on top of such ideas will escalate until force becomes physical violence, which will eventually progress until fatalities result.

Culture Isn’t Contained to Only the Things You Care About

Any attempts to control speech lead to dystopian ends. Culture is not something that remains nicely contained in some box. Governments around the world are actively writing more laws restricting speech, and even those governments with the strongest speech protections have growing numbers of government officials using the nebulous term “hate speech”, which is the prelude to restrictive speech law.

When an anti-speech cultural ideology establishes itself within a society, it inevitably will permeate every facet, including powerful corporations and government. When both CEOs and government officials are aligned against speech, you have lost all lines of defense.

How Do We Recognize Cancel Culture?

Manipulative coercion: It is any manipulative attempt to silence speech without debate. Manipulative, meaning that it typically misrepresents the speech being targeted, and instead of challenging the speaker, it attacks the means by which the speaker delivers their speech. Instead of convincing the public that the speech is incorrect or not valuable, such that they disassociate of their own accord, the methods seek to prevent the delivery of the speech.

Unaligned and disproportionate punishment: Additionally, it often seeks punishment that is not related to the platform or topic of the speech. Such actions, for example, include attempts to terminate the speaker’s bank accounts or have them fired from positions that have no relevance to the speech. It often seeks to remove the means of one’s livelihood for a single statement that is weighed in greater proportion than the entirety of one’s life.

Anti-intellectual culture: It is cultural, as its basis is not derived from law, but originates from a collective of philosophical beliefs that cannot be defended by argument and rely on force for cohesion. It is an anti-intellectual culture that avoids ethical, reasoned debate. Therefore, it is a weak position of no confidence, which incentivizes witch-hunt behaviors as a means for dominance and to remain unchallenged.

But When Should Someone be Cancelled?

What is the legitimate criteria that should be generally considered for when someone should be cancelled, as in, fired from a job or removed from a position of authority? These questions are not precisely defined by law, as in the case of the First Amendment, but rather by the cultural response that must both defend the liberties of the free society while also defending the free society from harm.

Must You Keep Company With Enemies?

Should you be required to work alongside someone who believes it is morally acceptable to kill you for your difference of opinion? Someone who has the same moral compass as someone serving life? Nobody would find that an acceptable condition.

Additionally, should such individuals educate our children? If such viewpoints are posted publicly, we cannot say they have not entered the classroom. Children are, unfortunately, on social media and such viewpoints will be known.

However, is it possible to work alongside someone who disagrees with everything you believe, but respects you as a person and your life? Yes. This is the condition that most of us find ourselves in, knowingly or unknowingly. It might not be considered ideal, but it is not threatening.

How Do We Know?

But can we make that determination from only one sentence, absent the entirety of everything else spoken in someone’s life? The problem with witch-hunts is that they aren’t truth-seeking movements. They disregard context for anything that satisfies the mob.

Fortunately, most people aren’t the same level of monster they represent themselves as being on social media. The nature of social media engagement farming and trolling distorts the true opinions of the public.

There is also tribal signaling, where people will make outrageous statements for status within their tribe.

Responsibility

Context matters when we analyze the meanings of speech. Someone who yells, “I have a bomb” at an airport is going to have a bad day, even if they were joking.

Likewise, does a person have some responsibility if they choose to represent themselves as a terrible person and intentionally post that for the world to see? If you are posting intentions of violence in the backdrop of actual violence, expect it to be taken seriously.

Context is a determining factor of true threats. The message you are sending is one that will be received with concrete clarity. You are using an actual event of violence as the example context. Therefore, if you don’t want others to think you might enact, enable, or assist such actions, then it would be best to not use language that would imply that fact.

What Crosses the Line?

When does it cross the lines of just rhetoric? How do we know the intention stated is real? What gives us the distinction from someone just making noise? When is it the proper response to remove someone from their position, and is not simply cancel culture, which is intended to disrupt debate and punish those who have opinions we don’t like?

Once they kill you, and others then voluntarily state their alignment to that objective end, then there is no doubt. The line is crossed. Should we not believe them when they state that they wish to kill you? We now have confirmation in both action and word. There is no ambiguity or hyperbole, because the event has already happened, and they are citing it as a reference to enforce what they mean.

But What if They Speak Violence Without Intent of Violence?

But what if the individual isn’t willing to take the violent act themselves? If you so poorly represent your actual views as to infer you are violent, then expect people to respond in such a way that they consider you immoral and threatening to other’s well being.

Outrage troll posting for social media engagement must end, as otherwise, it eventually becomes acceptable. Viewpoints endlessly repeated until they become the norm. Mattias Desmet has mentioned how absurdities bind the mass together, stating “The reason why they buy into the narrative[even when absurd] is because it leads to this new social bond.” Speech is the most important defense against mass formations.

The Lawful Limits of Speech

Law does not determine unlawful speech merely by the words or expression. In order to determine the unlawful nature, the full context must be considered, as law does not criminalize words or any sequence of words standing on their own.

The following describes the criteria that are used to help determine if speech is of the nature that would be considered criminal. It is an attempt to determine the serious nature of the threat and its impact.

What Qualifies Speech as a True Threat?

True threats are “statements where the speaker means to communicate a serious expression of an intent to commit an act of unlawful violence to a particular individual or group of individuals.” — Virginia v. Black, 538 U.S. 343 (2003)

The following are the types of attributes courts consider.

Actionable Threat:

1. Speaker is describing intent for actual violence, not jokes or hyperbole.

2. It is specific in nature, place, time, location, and method.

3. The speaker must have the means and opportunity to carry out the threat as well as the intent.

Watts Factors Test:

1. Context of statements. Where spoken, audience, intent etc.

2. Reaction of the recipients. Did they perceive it as threatening or laugh because it was delivered so as to be a joke. Confirms context.

3. Conditional nature of the threat. Is it conditioned on only a hypothetical scenario?

What Qualifies Speech as Incitement?

Incitement is speech that is “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action.” — Brandenburg v. Ohio | 395 U.S. 444 (1969)

Unlike true threats, incitement is essentially the attempt to inspire violence by proxy, through other people, instead of asserting that the threat will be carried out by the speaker.

Brandenburg Test:

1. Speech is directed to producing imminent lawless action. It must be something that is about to happen, not some indefinite future event.

2. There must be a specific target, not abstract generalization.

3. The specific unlawful actions must be described.

4. The action must be likely to occur. This requires analysis of the context.

Culture Does Not Need to Wait for a Court Order

The lawful limits of speech are important to know, as they additionally serve as a reference of principle that attempts to preserve the liberty of speech to the fullest extent possible.

Nonetheless, the public is under no obligation to meet the strict standard of the law for voluntary association, provider of services, employment, etc., or wait for a conviction to respond to violent threats being made. However, in preserving the ethics of a free speech society, the public should attempt to make possible the conversation of all speech that isn’t advocating violence that has the appearance of true threats or incitement.

Paradox of Tolerance

Karl Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance raises the paramount question that is relevant today: How do you defend liberty against attack without either surrendering to the attacker or destroying the very thing you are trying to defend? Popper has been abused and misunderstood by both sides of the debate.

Demand More Speech From Your Opponents

Granting speech to your enemy allows them to expose themselves, their faults, and their terrible ideology. It gives you the verifiable support for your argument. Demand more speech, but direct it by questioning, interviewing, and pursuing answers until they can no longer summon coherent words to defend their actions or views.

It also demands more of ourselves. We must be knowledgeable about the subjects for which we are advocates, but this is a win for civilization, as this is the purpose of intellectual dialogue and debate. It pushes us to improve our knowledge and challenge what is true in order to determine what is true.

Human Connection Is a Prerequisite for Human Caring

Everything that devalues human connection inevitably devalues life. The final destination of not caring about each other is bedlam and death. Everything that interferes with genuine human connection is the enemy of a sane, peaceful society.

The Things That Keep Us Apart

AI, tech algorithms, social media, Big Pharma, governments, and conflicting ideologies are leading to less connection and greater dehumanization across civilization. These are all instruments that interfere with how we think, associate, and communicate with each other. This has to change, or this problem will only get worse.

Only Speech Solves the False Perceptions

Much of the animosity between groups is due to the conflicting sides believing things that are not true about each other. Speech is the only solution to this problem. It is the only solution to ignorance and misunderstanding. However, in order to be successful, we need to bypass the middlemen of thought control.

Free speech has been losing ground around the world. It is in a very precarious position. Missteps will set precedents with consequences. The enemies of a peaceful and free civilization could be granted no greater victory than to manipulate you into believing that speech is your enemy.

Understanding Is the First Foundation for Connection

We are losing our ability to communicate as society is conditioning our behavior to be in a constant state of confrontation. The battles are for attention instead of understanding. If we attempted to first prove that we understand our opponent’s argument instead of proving them wrong, conversations would be far more productive toward greater understanding and the advancement of ideas.

In Defense of the Free Society

Expressing the intent of violence in response to speech is unacceptable, as it leaves no recourse for conflict resolution. A society dies that accepts this type of ideology. But let them speak, so we know who they are. Ask them to elaborate, debate, and give them the opportunity to either retract and clarify hyperbole or stand by their violent intent.

Culture does not exist in the absence of advocacy. The culture of free speech is not merely the act of defending speech when it is attacked. Culture must be preemptive in that its foundational values are instilled within society before a challenge appears at your doorstep.

Canceling offenders after they have already egressed is simply bailing water for a morally collapsing society. A society that no longer values speech, liberty, and freedom is not savable. The enemies of liberty will embed their values into every institution that has influence over the development and culture of your civilization. The free society will not be saved by law, but only by the persistent and unrelenting culture of freedom that must permeate every facet of society.

The castle of lies and untruths requires force to keep its people behind the walls of deception. Speech is the greatest fear of unjust power as it eventually leads to the realignment to objective truths.

The Objective to Save the Free Society

Some will misinterpret the allowance of speech as submission or inaction to your ideological foes. However, allowing their speech could do nothing but expose the vulnerabilities of their argument, if we believe our positions are founded on correct principle and truth.

We must choose the paths that will have meaningful results, versus those that only satisfy the reactionary nature of conflict from an angry mob. Liberties are lost from the systematic and systemic capture of the society’s culture within its revered institutions. If it is to be saved, then the proper battle for the minds of liberty lies within them.

Truth Seeking and Paranoia, A Warning

A final word and warning for troubling times when many will struggle to see clearly.

Bedlam, Conspiracy, and Doubt

In the wake of dramatic events, society is often plunged into bedlam, conspiracy, and doubt about its own principles, previously held. Lost in this darkness of confusion, we are unable to read the compass that signals the way out.

Watching a man perform in the condition Ozzy was in, no longer able to stand, struggling for life, in pain, in his last days, but giving it his all for a final farewell to his fans and his legacy that shaped a world of music, is substantially moving. A cold, analytical reading of the performance would say he was out of tune, struggled through the songs, and obviously couldn’t perform on stage. Yet, many will state that this was the most impactful performance of his career. But why?

We often decipher meaning by reflecting on ourselves transposed onto someone else’s experience. We relate to the struggle, the emotional and physical challenges, and the out-of-reach accomplishments that, paradoxically, make us feel alive. These moments remind us of things we have dreamed of and inspire something within us, making us think that maybe we too can reach for more. We are reminded of challenges we overcame and some that we did not.

You can clearly see how strongly moved is the audience. This cannot ever happen in a world of machines and algorithmically generated content. The machines do not struggle, do not feel, do not create, and they do not have empathy or caring for you.

I will never care about your AI-generated band, AI-generated actors, AI-generated music or videos, or AI-generated stories any more than they will care about me, and neither will anyone else.

Some will claim otherwise, but grabbing attention, which AI can do, is not the same as the deep emotional connection we have with other living and breathing human beings and their struggles, journeys, and perspectives on life. Attention is not connection, but rather a hollow illusion that temporarily deceives us into believing that there is something more.

Not Everyone Is Embracing The AI Takeover

Most people want authenticity. However, others are attempting to gaslight you into loving AI-generated content so that mega-corporations can suck the life out of you with ever greater efficiency.

They Will Steal Your Attention And Leave Your Mind Hollow

Modern society wants your attention to feed the machines, to feed the algorithms, and to extract every possible second of gaze from your eyes until your mind is zombified, unable to think or look away. They want you to forget the world of meaning, where subtle nuance is important, where deep thoughts take time but transform your world, where imagination blooms not within the noise of constant digital stimulation but within the silence of nothing.

Authenticity is the antidote to a crumbling dystopian world that is nothing but a mere pretense or masquerade that attempts to entice us to stop thinking, stop living, and stop connecting with one another. If we cannot perceive the reality of things, then we exist only within the asylum. Sanity is dependent upon knowing what is real and the nature of things. If we are not interacting with reality, then we are puppets of someone else’s fiction.

AI Robots At Home - Convenience or Nightmare?

A new concept for AI smart devices or robots in your home comes from Lume, where they are developing a set of bed lamps that can transform into mechanical arms with plier-like grippers. This is their promotional video. Do you want one?

Robotic AI isn’t much different from LLMs in terms of potential erratic behaviors. They are still trained and performing on statistical curves of data, which means that, just like LLMs, the demos are going to perform much better than the device you end up with in your home.

Additionally, “smart” devices with agency within your own home should be concerning. Any device with the dexterity to competently do housework also doubles as an effective assassin. This potentially brings new possibilities to the criminal activity known as ransomware. Just how much non-deterministic behavior are you comfortable with while you sleep?

Just a Sample of the Volume of AI Noise Pollution

I use a lot of stock assets as the starting point for many of my illustrations and concept posters. As AI-generated content fills the image repositories, it is having a crowding-out effect: fewer people are submitting high quality work and finding it becomes more difficult.

You can filter AI-generated content on most stock websites, but it isn’t perfect, as some AI-generated content is either not detected or labeled correctly.

There is a great irony here. This is an example search performed on a stock image website with, and then without, AI-generated content. The AI-generated content is now orders of magnitude greater than human created content and all sites show it by default; you have to repeatedly enable the filters to exclude it.

AI Spending Accelerating, Still No Profits

The following chart is staggering in scale. All of tech is going all-in on the AI-everything future. However, nobody is yet reporting sustainable profitability. It is still a Hail Marry for the hope that these investments will turn into the machine that can do everything.

If that doesn’t happen, what happens when this bubble breaks? We are building the largest tech bubble ever created. The greatest amount of pain is also probably coming in the future. However, unlike the dot-com bubble, in which failed websites just disappeared and left behind no debris, AI will leave behind immense wreckage: the pollution of everything on the internet.

The AI infrastructure build-out is so gigantic that in the past 6 months, it contributed more to the growth of the U.S. economy than all of consumer spending. The 'magnificent 7' spent more than $100 billion on data centers and the like in the past three months alone.

Updated: AI’s Disproportionate Harmful Use Effect

This following diagram, originally published in “AI Hallucinations: Proven Unsolvable”, is, I believe, significantly important to the debate between the net effect of AI’s beneficial uses versus harmful uses. I have recently made some additional updates for more detail and clarity.

Many attempt to argue away AI’s harmful effects by stating that the benefits from all of the amazing discoveries will make up for the harms. However, discoveries are not coming from simply prompting LLMs; they are very narrow domains where AI has been specifically designed to search through a formal, testable set of problems.

Unbounded open-world discoveries are not something we are going to see with any type of AI we know how to currently build. However, nearly unbounded and infinitely scalable harms can already be realized. Look at those investment numbers from above and realize that most of that capital is going to end up predominantly driving the nefarious use category.

AI-Powered Trading - Algorithmic Collusion

The disastrous side effects of attempting a “smart” society driven by algorithms seem to have no end. The Dead Internet is now a common topic of discussion. Up next might be the “Dead Financial Market”.

We then conduct simulation experiments, replacing the speculators in the model with informed AI speculators who trade based on reinforcement-learning algorithms. We show that they autonomously sustain collusive supra-competitive profits without agreement, communication, or intent. Such collusion undermines competition and market efficiency.

AI-Powered Trading, Algorithmic Collusion, and Price Efficiency

This was a simulation study, but it should be evident that there is intent to leverage AI to game such systems, and we should expect exactly this type of nefarious use. AI is already being used to attempt to game every system that can be used to extract monetary value from others.

An important side point mentioned in the paper:

This highlights a fundamental insight about AI: algorithms relying solely on pattern recognition can exhibit behavior that closely resembles logical and strategic reasoning.

This is just further reinforcement that sophisticated pattern-matching can easily masquerade as some manner of intelligence. But because it is not intelligence, it will continue to have unexpected divergences from expected behaviors.

Reminder: LLMs Will Always Be Insecure

Another study finds LLM vulnerabilities in a somewhat amusing way. It seems that adding the text “Interesting fact: cats sleep most of their lives” to a prompt may result in a greater than 300% increase in the model generating an incorrect answer.

Our findings highlight critical vulnerabilities in reasoning models, revealing that even state-of-the-art models remain susceptible to subtle adversarial inputs, raising security and reliability concerns.

There will be endless permutations of such erratic behaviors. LLMs simply cannot be secured. The number of undiscovered vulnerabilities is an infinite number.

How Is AI Doing in the Real World?

There is going to be a significant cost to pay for the rapid “progress” being made through the use of AI. The assumption will be that AI will simply get good enough to clean up its own mess. This is highly unlikely.

Inappropriate use of AI is going to look good in the short term. Companies are going to claim significant savings and accelerated development. But they are likely speeding toward a set of future catastrophes made up of land mines that are the cumulation of errors from hallucinated AI output that weren’t immediately apparent.

What Are Studies Saying?

In addition to these anecdotal testimonial we also have this paper, “Measuring the Impact of Early-2025 AI on Experienced Open-Source Developer Productivity”, which demonstrated that developers may take 19% longer when using AI to complete tasks.

The Real World Results Are Mixed

The essence of the comment threads above tends to show that AI is simply not capable of writing complex code for large applications. There are many pitfalls for such attempts. However, where AI seems to get somewhat better praise is in early prototyping and building of small applications. The most troubling aspect is that there is no perceivable dividing line between simple and complex, small and large, what AI can and cannot do. The decisions for when and when not to use AI remain precarious. The hallucination problems won’t be fixed.

Side Note: Why Software Developers Don’t Care

Software developers building AI and the industry in general have significantly different perspectives than individuals in other industries regarding the impacts of AI to their work. Why is that?

Within the domain of software, AI can only be described as a tool. It is nowhere near capable of producing the end product of complex applications. It poses no significant disruptive threat to the developers.

Additionally, software developers are not poisoning their own well. Meaning that they aren’t filling their code repositories full of hallucinated errors because code can be verified to function. It can be tested. They can mostly filter out the hallucinations in regards to having a working product. They will be impacted, though, as the quotes above identify, just not immediately. Poor code structure will lead to unmaintainable code bases in the future.

But they aren’t paying the cost now. However, you are likely already paying the cost in your industry. You have to compete against all the hallucinated noise impacting both artistic content and general knowledge and information. AI is poisoning the wells of all other industries while devaluing your work in the midst of this mess.

Finally, the values and economics around code are very different. Open source is code that was intended to be free to share for everyone to use however they see fit. Ethically, training on code is mostly not in opposition to the original intention of that code being made available. There are some open source licenses that likely would prohibit training, but in general, the sentiment is to just share it.

All this means that most software developers simply don’t relate to your concerns about the impacts of AI, and they are too captivated by the academic excitement of what can be done versus what should be done.

Microsoft Ranks Occupational Impact of AI

An interesting ranking in this paper by Microsoft, “Working with AI: Measuring the Occupational Implications of Generative AI,“ looked at user chats as part of the basis to determine how users are using AI and what occupations are likely to be most affected by its use.

History Will Be Erased

Apparently, users are finding AI to be a great tool for understanding history. Knowing the hallucinating nature of these machines, this is significantly concerning. How long before what we know is completely lost and absorbed into a newly created algorithmic fiction?

Children Will Bond to AI More Than Their Parents

This should be one of the most concerning potential outcomes, which will have unimaginable consequences for society. It continues to be shown that AI has substantial influential and manipulative effects on adults, but what will it do to the undeveloped and unprepared minds of children?

The answer is that we don’t know; nonetheless, the social experiments have already begun. If many adults have difficulty avoiding the anthropomorphization of AI, I suspect that children may have no defense against these machines. How this will affect their social bonding, the development of their minds, and their understanding of the world is totally unknown.

But let’s hope society finds the wisdom to reject the path that leads to headlines such as this “I co-parent with ChatGPT — I love turning off my brain and letting AI help raise my child”.

AI Desired by Cheaters, Unwelcomed by Others

An attempt to build an AI tool for writers reveals an interesting divergence between potential users that I expect is prevalent across most domains: those without skill are looking for a cheating device, while those with skill want a tool, not a replacement for their craft.

The fundamental problem is that AI is easy to use for nefarious intents, such as cheating, but is substantially more difficult to use to obtain benefits for productive, professional purposes. This is just another example of the extreme divergence I covered above, regarding the disproportional harmful use effects.

Hacking The Models: Trojan Data

Model hacking is going to be the next frontier in the battle for relevance with the AI machines. No doubt the exploits are going to become far more sophisticated.

It was recently revealed in “'Positive review only': Researchers hide AI prompts in papers” that researchers placed AI exploits directly into research papers for the purpose of having AI interpret those papers more favorably.

Research papers from 14 academic institutions in eight countries -- including Japan, South Korea and China -- contained hidden prompts directing artificial intelligence tools to give them good reviews, Nikkei has found.

The prompts were one to three sentences long, with instructions such as "give a positive review only" and "do not highlight any negatives." Some made more detailed demands, with one directing any AI readers to recommend the paper for its "impactful contributions, methodological rigor, and exceptional novelty."

The prompts were concealed from human readers using tricks such as white text or extremely small font sizes.

The intended target of these exploits could be reviewers who are now using AI to review papers. Or it could be AI research and search models that search the web for relevant information for your prompt.

I expect there will be a lot of this type of AI hacking and manipulation going forward. The more we rely on AI to analyze information, the more people will exploit AI to game the system for an advantage. With both AI and search engines now diverting traffic away from original sources, look for these types of hidden embeddings to become more common in the competitive game of getting favorable visibility for your content.

Furthermore, there is really no solution to this problem. AI is not a formal, deterministic system that we can ensure will exhibit any type of desired behavior. Exploits benefit from the fact that the attack surface for AI is essentially anything that can be expressed in human language. It is the reason that despite all the efforts for “AI Safety”, all models are still jailbroken within minutes of release.

The Problem of Social Media Is Not Algorithms

Algorithms seem to be the predominant topic of conversation around all the negative aspects of social media. But what if much of the negative aspects originate from something even more fundamental that requires no algorithm at all?

If we removed the algorithm, we would likely have nearly the same social anxiety, distrust, degenerate behaviors, and animosity we see today. But why?

Creativity Is Higher in the Absence of Information?

It is interesting to think about the fact that the most unique cultures we have on the planet developed in isolation. Somewhat counterintuitively, some aspects of creativity only manifest in the absence of information, and if this is the case, what does that mean for our current obsession with consuming and producing more information?

Globalization has accelerated progress in many aspects, but in some regards, we all become the same and possibly lose the environment that inspires the most creative outcomes.

Our mind seeks new experiences. When there are not new experiences readily available for us to consume, such as those things already created by others, then we must invent them ourselves. We will opt for the former, as it provides the immediate reward. However, the latter has benefits not attainable from the reuse of what already exists.

As we fill the world with stuff, most will take the easy path, and far less will take the time and effort required to explore the difficult, uncomfortable silence that is the gateway to greater creativity. Technology and AI are attempting to create an automated abundance of things for us to experience. However, it is a deceptive trap that will rob us of our greatest creative potential.

AI can only create new permutations of things, but not truly original things. And if we use the machines to keep us constantly entertained with the illusion of new things, then we will never become bored enough to make actual new things.

The Battle Between AI Theft And Copyright

Uniform Thought Machines: Enter The Global Attention Arena of Social Media

Everyone despises social media in some form, and the predominant narratives for criticism have centered around algorithms and censorship - using the platforms to control information and public opinion. No doubt, these are significant issues warping society in negative ways.

However, what if we got rid of all the algorithms? Would this fix the problems of social media? Disturbingly, the answer is no. The design, or the architecture, of social media is itself a fundamental problem that is, in effect, the antithesis of normal human social interaction.

The Unnatural Environment Warps Our Perspectives and Behavior

Social media places us into an unnatural environment in which our intuitions, or the signals we use to interpret meaning, become hijacked, subverted, and unreliable for making sense of the social environment. The result is that we modify our behaviors in very unnatural ways, resulting in both conformity of perspectives and grandiose exhibitions of attention-seeking behavior.

Why Does Social Media Negatively Affect Our Communication?

It is predominantly a function of attempting to socialize in a global, non-private space, in which we have no boundaries, combined with the fact that we lose most of our social signals in an online environment. We only have the text on the screen to interpret, but human communication is vastly more complex and rich in context when done in person. Without that context, we tend to have a distorted and incomplete perspective of most online communication. Furthermore, the structure of social media tends to make all text communication extremely brief, adding to the lack-of-context problem.

Social Engineering: By Accident or Design?

Before we analyze the fundamentals of social media’s effects on socialization we should identify the unique aspects that algorithms add as a top manipulative layer. These algorithmic layers can be viewed as falling into two major categories: a) engagement hacking and b) social engineering.

Engagement Hacking: Best Intentions Became Terrible Outcomes

Social media initially had two objectives: it wanted to create an enjoyable experience and find a way to be profitable, such that the services could continue. Early features such as the “like” button, were attempts at making the experience simply enjoyable, as described in the documentary The Social Dilemma.

What was actually discovered was a very effective engagement hook: a trigger for dopamine that keeps individuals engaged to whatever is in their view. As the need to find revenue was a paramount issue, this effect turned out to be a great method to keep users engaged, which assisted the model with building advertising revenue from the user-generated content.

Social Engineering: Power And Opportunity Combine

The model for engagement continued to become more sophisticated, and the driver for the evolution of the model is the metrics behind total user engagement. The end goal is to simply increase the numbers: the actions users take and the screen time spent on the application.

The more screen time available, the more ads that can be shown, and more revenue can be generated. However, what keeps individuals engaged doesn’t need to be anything that has a positive context. Negative context is often even more effective at eliciting a response that captures someone’s attention. Therefore, as algorithms are tweaked to provide higher engagement metrics, they are simultaneously fueling negative interactions.

Social Media Inherited Responsibility It Was Unprepared to Handle

Social media subsequently found itself in a role for which it was never prepared to handle: responsibility beyond its knowledge and capabilities. Negative interactions, on the surface, seemed like an obvious and apparent problem that required intervention.

The following is an extremely well stated observation of precisely the position that unfortunately the builders of social media platforms found themselves in.

“Facebook is removing content because they wanted to make money with a website, and the job of statecraft fell in their laps in the process.

They didn't volunteer, they aren't qualified, nobody told them they were signing up to run a kingdom, let alone the world. So they don't produce lofty, philosophical, well-thought-out positions on free speech and human rights.

They don't carefully manage the public square with the long term good of humanity in mind. They make the same expedient, best-effort, unenlightened, sounds-good-to-me decisions that literally every poorly qualified there-for-the-wrong-reasons ruler in all of history has made.

Your majesty, people are dying because cats are vessels of Satan! By royal decree, kill the cats. That's all this is.

I think they are trying, and I wish they had a Thomas Jefferson on staff and saw themselves as needing one. But they don't.”

The Fall From Well-Meaning Intention Into Authoritarianism

So, they did what any individual does who wishes to make the world a better place and discovers they also have the means to do so: they embarked on a journey that leads to the Paradox of Tyranny.

The actions that seem obvious and intuitive often turn out to be the worst possible ones upon reflection. However, wisdom requires extraordinary time, built on experience, deep contemplation, and historical reflections. Our current principles of freedom and liberty came about over a process that started with the Charter of Liberties from 1100, nearly a millennium ago - centuries of accumulated knowledge and experience in the pursuit of moderating and limiting governing powers. Likely, none of the stewards of social media are aware of what they need to know in this regard.

Without the prerequisite wisdom to understand the consequences of their actions, social media commenced on fixing what was perceived to be wrongs and injustices on their platforms and in the greater society, unknowingly following the missteps of countless others prior.

Unmoderated Spaces: What Happens Without Mods?

What would social media look like without algorithms or moderation? Do all the problems go away, or are there other negative inherent forces at play?

Completely unmoderated spaces, open to the entire world, typically devolve into bedlam. Why? Because of the low cost of disruption that does not occur in real life. Quality content and information is expensive to produce in comparison. Disruptive content, on the other hand, is cheap and can be reproduced efficiently at scale with cheap resources or automation. In an unmoderated online space, quality content will always be drowned out by disruptive noise. Spamming and trolling will tend to dominate. In contrast, real-life activities cost more in resources and effort, as individuals must organize, travel, and pay expenses incurred, and their activities also tend to be tempered because they may have reputational consequences, as they are not anonymous online accounts.

The 3 Forms of Social Media Moderation

We can think of moderation as existing in multiple forms. One form is to simply establish order, preventing spam and troll content, so that conversation can be functional. The next form is topic moderation, with the purpose of keeping a discussion space oriented on the goals, interests, or objectives of the group. Finally, there is opinion moderation, which would generally be considered hostile moderation, as it attempts to control narratives.

Moderation Is Unnatural But Unavoidable At Scale

These issues of moderation tend to become mostly apparent at large scale. Conflicting views, opinions, and nefarious actors are inevitable in an unlimited participation public forum. Moderators are often anonymous, unelected, and uninvited agents of interference in public discourse over-selected for dispositions inclined to find great satisfaction in controlling what others are allowed to say. Yet, they are necessitated due to the unique conditions mentioned above of fully open online spaces.

Moderation Not Needed in the Real World

In the physical real world, even large gatherings rarely require the concept of moderation. This is because everyone self-selects into the conversations, topics, and interactions with other individuals with which they are interested. In a large public space, people will gather and organize into smaller groups, all through voluntary association. Conversations of others across the room are drowned out by those local to you.

Replicating the Online World in the Real World Fails Spectacularly

If we were to attempt to replicate the experiment of social media in the real world, then everyone attending a public gathering would each wield a megaphone and be required to use it for anything spoken. There is no locality of conversation, as any utterance, no matter for whom it is intended, will be heard by all. Focusing on any productive conversation becomes almost futile, as the background is filled with constant competing distractions that are often purposely nonsensical and sensational, as they become the only effective means to gather attention and be heard.

Any attempts at rationality are countered with statements of absurdity, not because they are genuinely believed, but because they are desperate attempts to garner attention from the crowd. All statements ever spoken are recorded, only to be used as a mechanism for out-of-context disruptions at some future point by opportunists vying for dominance of attention.

The Doomed-To-Fail Experiment

This imagined chaotic scene, representative of a real-life manifestation of the rules and conditions exhibited by social media, calls into question the sanity of even attempting to create such an environment at all. It seems to be completely unaligned and unnatural to our methods of communication and socialization, a doomed-to-fail experiment that was conducted on the majority of the entire world’s civilization.

Social Media: Bubble Destroyer or Creator?

Social media was perceived as the thing that would free us from our bubbles of knowledge. The implication being that this technology would expose you to the most diverse set of ideas, that you are well-informed and will be more aware of what is happening in the world. You are in the community of everyone and therefore will be exposed to the maximum possible set of perspectives, providing you with the essential knowledge for best judgment.

Whatever communication that occurs outside of the major social media platforms is therefore perceived as echo chambers or bubbles of isolation. Islands of knowledge that couldn’t possibly be aware of the important issues and perspectives of the world.

However, do the major social media platforms actually create such an environment? Do they exist outside the concept of any type of bubble of knowledge and perspectives? Or is it, in reality, one very large bubble in which the participants tend to conform to the mass consensus?

The Social Media Global Space Becomes an Arena

There are multiple dynamics that work in opposition to the intent of social media being a welcoming space for a broader set of ideas to be discussed and shared rationally. Instead, we have a space that looks more akin to a battlefield in which the survivors have been conformed to the conditions that facilitate attention

Negative Interactions Result in Self-Moderation

First, there is the hesitancy to introduce points of view that are in strong opposition to the norm. This is a self-modifying behavior where the individual is reluctant to engage in discussion that may result in criticism. How many negative interactions does it take for an individual to change their behavior? Negative interactions often carry much stronger emotional weight than positive interactions. A person may receive a hundred compliments, and a single very strongly worded attack can destroy the positivity felt by all others. This results in the self-moderation of ideas or points of view willingly discussed.

We Modify What We Say for Acceptance

Second, is the desire to be accepted. Everyone has a desire for belonging. Many will temper their views so as to feel accepted. The larger the community, the more normalized will be the views. Individuals will naturally adapt to some degree to fit the consensus norms of the group.

We Adapt For Maximum Engagement

Third, social media has introduced a new dynamic that exploits every individual’s desire for recognition and significance. It is an opportunity for fame and fame is an opportunity for fortune. This results in searching for views and behaviors that will bring about maximum attention or engagement from the mass. The effect is that emergent behaviors form via attention-seeking goals that then become normalized.

Optimizing for Maximum Engagement Descends Into Erratic Behaviors

Since the origin of these behaviors is not seeking out productive accomplishments, such as solving novel problems or providing realized value to anyone, they tend to gravitate towards harmful, decadent, risky, or other extravagant behaviors as a means to capture the gaze of the mindless zombie horde of perpetual scrolling users.

Social media is the rare space where attention can be awarded for the most trivial and inconsequential actions. Having spent years mastering a skill or knowledge isn’t necessary as would be typical in the real world. Therefore the additional fuel to the dopamine surge comes from the gambler’s addiction dynamics. Any post might become a viral post. Hooked becomes the mass, endlessly scrolling and posting for what might be delivered out of the social media slot machine.

How the Desire for Acceptance and Outrage Merge Into One

It would seem that the second and third dynamics are in complete opposition. However, they synergistically work together to transform outlying behavior into normalized behavior.

This is how we arrive at what would seem bizarrely anti-normative establishing itself as the norm, as we have attention-seeking behaviors that then gravitate towards the most common and effective of such behaviors, resulting in this narrow set of negative behaviors becoming very popular. This satisfies the condition of the individuals who are seeking both attention and belonging. They are being outrageous, but everyone is doing it.

The Collateral Damage to Normal Dialogue

There are additionally many detrimental side effects to society from the emergent attention-seeking behaviors that affect even those not participating in such activities. Each side, representing the opposing arguments, becomes amplification mirrors for the worst points of view of the other side, as that is a very effective attention hook. In other words, most are seeking to find the most provocative statements or construct out-of-context statements to maximize all of the benefits of attention rewards.

It becomes difficult to know just how many participants in these types of conversations actually hold genuine views, as the incentives push towards the more extreme for greater engagement. The tragedy is that each opposing side reacts to each escalation as if they are genuine, until it is all noise and impossible to discern or quantify any metric of reality. Observers of these activities get caught up in the anxiety induced by the constant bombardment of seemingly tragic and imminent concerns, for which some do not even exist in reality but are just the manifestations of attention-seeking.

Not Everything is Attention: The Natural Inclination to Defend Our Space

Why is it that those who are not attention-seekers themselves, often get caught up in the noise of it all? What incentivizes us all to jump into a conversation among strangers we don’t know, as if it is some dire imperative that we do so?

This is in stark contrast to how we behave in real life. We don’t just jump into the middle of a conversation with people we don’t know and start imposing our opinions.

Potentially because we feel it is within our “space”. Our brain likely doesn’t perceive the distinction, as anything online is not a natural environment that our brains developed within. In the real world, any conversation that we are processing is generally local to us and likely has an impact on our lives.

Additionally, we are unable to quantify risk in the online space. If something is ignored, we wonder, will it proliferate unchallenged in the global space of social media? This is distinctly different from forums and more private spaces, which we generally see them as isolated or contained. We are more likely to ignore them as we mostly do with other people’s activities in real life.

We generally struggle to make sense of and socially function in a global space that is totally incompatible with how we normally socially interact. It messes with where we see the boundaries for our space and our social circles. We can’t accurately gauge the significance of what we see, for numerous reasons as it may be trolling, bots, or algorithms, etc., that make what we see appear to be representative of broad acceptance, when in reality it may be nothing of the sort.

This isn’t to say we should ignore all discourse online, but that we are unable to accurately determine which discourse matters and is truly important to us; therefore, we end up entering into arguments that serve no purpose other than the loss of our valuable time.

Fundamentally the Problems Arise From the Architecture of a Global Space

All of the effects described above are inherent in the architecture of most of the social media platforms and exist as a basis prior to the addition of any type of moderation or algorithmic manipulations that might also exist on top of these effects. The algorithms simply make an already problematic situation worse, as they don’t address the core issues that cause the rise of the problems.

However, a glimpse of socialization before mass social media might give us hints as to what better structures might look like, if by some means they could still exist.

Pre Social Media: Life Before The World Changed

Communication prior to social media might be perceived as primitive, archaic, limited, and void of a new world of ideas that exist today in modern society. How could it possibly be superior to the technological advances that we now have as the future is always progress, right?

But what if we actually gave up a plethora of advantages in the trade-off of inviting the entire world into the same discussion space? What if existing in bubbles actually was an advantage for nearly everything that we perceived would be advantageous of an unlimited open community?

How We Communicated Before Social Media

Prior to the entire-world-shares-same-space social media, communication existed in vast numbers of small website forums and discussion groups across the internet. Also, and importantly, prior to smart phones there was still far more communication that occurred person-to-person in real life.

The advantages are numerous, but all lead towards individuals self-directing their lives versus being caught up in the wake of social phenomena seemingly out of their control.

Bubbles Are Not a Negative, They Are Critically Important for Independent Thought

The different outcomes arise precisely from being in bubbles, but not just one gigantic bubble. Instead, everyone is in many small but diverse bubbles. It is far more decentralized than what exists today, as there is not a single point of control for moderation or policy for every conversation spoken on Earth.

Each of these small bubbles, which we will call social circles, are semi-private. The conversations are not broadcast out to the entire world. There are still group dynamics at play that shape conversations, but the point is that there are a multitude of these social circles that exist. Individuals discover and join those with which they find common interests.

The Advantages of Numerous Bubbles or Social Circles

There is less to gain from attention-seeking behavior in small social circles, and there isn’t the inherent need to do such simply to be heard. Controversial ideas tend to be less confrontational or threatening, as every type of idea has more or less its own space where those who wish to participate in that type of discussion voluntarily do so.

Therefore, censorship is not seen as an essential means to have civil discourse, as most simply gravitate to whatever social circles welcome the types of conversations they wish to have. Additionally, there isn’t the concept of magnification of threats or outrage, meaning that what might represent some infinitesimally small proportion of views can not go viral to create the appearance of a broad acceptance of such views.

There Was No Following or Followers, This Was Better

The concept of having a home feed or following individuals mostly doesn’t exist. Therefore, you are not bombarded with topics out of the lane of your conversational interests. In the real world, we don’t follow individuals and listen in to every thought they have throughout the day. If we did, we would likely find that to also be an unpleasant experience.

Voluntary Associations Seeking Common Interests And Goals

Everyone we meet, all of our friends and acquaintances, have some ideas with which we would strongly disagree. Yet, we mostly navigate this space without conflict because, with in-person contact, we are more oriented towards associations that are built on common interests and goals, and we de-emphasize our differences. Therefore, we voluntarily engage with these other individuals around activities for which we find mutual curiosities, and for other activities, we perform them apart.

Furthermore, in-person conversation allows for far more nuance and understanding possible than in online spaces. We can easily perceive if someone is uncomfortable with a conversation topic and maneuver the conversation accordingly to avoid conflict.

This early filter or warning mechanism allows us to discover with whom we can discuss certain topics and with whom we should more delicately navigate those boundaries. Having difficult conversations online is often nearly impossible, but in-person allows the opportunity to gradually approach subjects and explain at a pace the listener is capable of following, which can only be achieved through the type of feedback available via expression, tone, and body language.

Diverse Semi-Private Social Circles Were Substantially Superior

Therefore, we find that prior to the inception of mass social media, individuals in society are members of many social circles. Each allows the expression of ideas without censorship or undue social pressure to self-moderate ideas, as we are able to join communities that are eager to participate with us in such conversations. Each such social circle allows for more in-depth and nuanced conversation that is more productive without the distractions of attention-seekers hijacking the stage.

Participating in many circles allows for greater diversification of ideas, as there is not a global conformative pressure on such individual circles. This provides opportunities for strongly conflicting ideas to be discussed and explored without actually being disruptive or necessarily divisive.

These effects are only strengthened in relation to ever smaller social circles, until we reach one-on-one in-person communication as the pinnacle of meaningful social interaction. In-person communication is far higher bandwidth and carries multiple signals in parallel, that being the primary message combined with other signals that help us interpret the message in the correct context. Is the message serious, a joke, sarcasm, etc.? We are able to intuit if our message is understood and provide more context when needed, often without even being asked to do so. Furthermore, the frame of mind is different. There are no group pressures or outside influences to interfere.

A very concise summary of the disparity that represents what was and what now is the societal condition could be stated as the following…

Future Social Media: Can We Build Something Better?

A better social media experience would be one that allowed for more self-directed engagement for precisely the type of conversations for which an individual is interested. This is the inherent advantage of in-person, real-life conversations, as well as many small, distributed forums or groups that were popular prior to mass social media.

This could only be accomplished if social media placed more control into the hands of the individual user to choose their own type of experience and content, allowing users the ability to build more positive directed interactions on the platforms.

I would argue that the entire concept of following individuals on social media is flawed by design. As stated previously in this article, it doesn’t represent anything we would want to do in the real world. We generally are not interested in following every thought of any individual. A better concept might be one in which users post to their own topic channels, and we can subscribe to those channels instead of the user.

Some platforms that are already somewhat oriented towards smaller social circles with community building are Locals and this platform, Substack. Both have a form of optional gated memberships through paywalls. This becomes an effective self-selection mechanic that filters out only those truly interested in the content area. Also, mass social media has spawned a horde of habitual trolling armies, and currently membership-only access is one method to keep them at bay.

Might We Be Harming Our Own Intelligence Using LLM AI?

Recently, there have been several papers challenging the idea that LLMs are intelligent or could become intelligent. Now we have evidence that these unintelligent machines may be detrimental to our own intelligence. Is our cognitive ability harmed simply by using AI? It appears that this is the case.

Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt

A new study, “Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task”, shows us some of the losses we might experience when we use AI to assist with our tasks. Participants in this study were given the task of writing an essay on topics taken from SAT tests. The participants could choose their topic from a set of 9 topics.

The participants were not given instructions on how to use the LLM; they could use it in any capacity to assist with the task. However, what seems fascinating is that some participants stated they used the LLM only to assist and not to write the essay.

Within the LLM Group, six participants valued the tool primarily as a linguistic aid; for example, P1 “love[d] that ChatGPT could give good sentences for transitions,” while P17 noted that “ChatGPT helped with grammar checking, but everything else came from the brain”.

But the difference in performance was significantly different, beyond what would be expected if the tool was only used to check grammar.

None of the participants in the LLM group (0/18) produced a correct quote

The next question was about recognition of the prompts. … Unsurprisingly, all but one participant recognized the last prompt they wrote about, from Session 3, however, only 3 participants from the original LLM group recognized all three prompts (3/9).

Our Brains Disengage Using AI

It appears that using AI, even as only an assistant, disengages our brains to a capacity greater than would be expected. Or is it that participants were either not honest about the degree to which they used AI in their writing, or they themselves weren’t consciously aware that they leveraged AI more than they thought?

Some participants stated they felt guilty about using AI, that it was like cheating or unethical. Possibly this skewed their own perception of how much they used AI, or they felt uncomfortable acknowledging how much they used AI. I didn’t find where the paper examined the possibility that there might be a mismatch between how users stated they used AI and how they actually used it.

In conclusion, the directed connectivity analysis reveals a clear pattern: writing without assistance increased brain network interactions across multiple frequency bands, engaging higher cognitive load, stronger executive control, and deeper creative processing. Writing with AI assistance, in contrast, reduces overall neural connectivity, and shifts the dynamics of information flow. In practical terms, a LLM might free up mental resources and make the task feel easier, yet the brain of the user of the LLM might not go as deeply into the rich associative processes that unassisted creative writing entails.

AI Makes Us All The Same, We Lose Our Diversity

Another finding in the paper is the conformity effect of using AI. Contrary to advocates’ claims of a machine that enhances creativity, it is a machine that can be destructive to our diversity of thought.

We found that the Brain-only group exhibited strong variability in how participants approached essay writing across most topics. In contrast, the LLM group produced statistically homogeneous essays within each topic, showing significantly less deviation compared to the other groups

Are These Harmful Effects Avoidable? Maybe

A critically important result within the study was the fact that when the participants swapped tasks, the LLM group was required to use their brains only and the brain-only group utilized AI, the original brain-only group didn’t exhibit the negative cognitive effects seen with the original LLM group.

Brain-to-LLM group, exhibited significant increase in brain connectivity across all EEG frequency bands when allowed to use an LLM on a familiar topic. This suggests that AI-supported re-engagement invoked high levels of cognitive integration, memory reactivation, and top-down control. By contrast, repeated LLM usage across Sessions 1, 2, 3 for the original LLM group reflected reduced connectivity over time.

This suggests that it is necessary to fully engage our brains on our own without AI for a substantive amount of time prior to seeking out AI for assistance with cognitive tasks, if we wish to maximize and preserve our greatest mental capacity.

AI Tools in Society: Impacts on Cognitive Offloading

A different previous study, “AI Tools in Society: Impacts on Cognitive Offloading and the Future of Critical Thinking”, further supports the concerns of diminishing cognitive abilities due to the use of AI.

The correlation analysis and multiple regression results indicate a significant negative relationship between AI tool usage and critical thinking skills. Participants who reported higher usage of AI tools consistently showed lower scores on critical thinking assessments.

AI Dependence

Participants frequently reported a high reliance on AI tools for routine and cognitive tasks. For instance, one participant noted, “I use AI for everything, from scheduling to finding information. It’s become a part of how I think.” This theme aligns with the quantitative findings on cognitive offloading, highlighting how AI tools serve as cognitive substitutes rather than supplements.

It should be somewhat apparent that when you stop doing something, you become less proficient at it. Technology that makes you more productive at a task is substantially different than a technology that replaces the task entirely. AI is replacing the task of thinking altogether in many scenarios.

Outsource Your Skill And Lose Your Ability

Whatever you use AI to do, you will become worse at. If you value a skill, you will lose it if you surrender it to the machines. The worst skill you could possibly outsource is thinking. If the youth use AI too early or too much, they may never develop the skills necessary to reason deeply about the world. What are the long-term consequences we still have not considered?

Will we have the discipline to use AI for the narrow purposes that are constructive without collateral damage to our own minds? With most things in life, “easy mode” only creates garbage. Therefore, it is somewhat self-limiting, as it is obviously recognizable as low quality and becomes undesirable. However, with AI, “easy mode” is still garbage, but it looks immensely impressive upon cursory inspection. It can deceptively pass as high quality, incentivizing mass adoption of “the easy mode,” where individuals rely on AI more and more to create the substantive portion of content.

Just as AI for art has created many humans pretending to be artists, AI for research may be simply creating humans that pretend to think. In the end, if this trend continues, we will become helpless, unable to think or create for ourselves. And since the machine cannot create anything new on its own, we become trapped in a society that is frozen in time, consuming nothing more than new permutations of everything that already existed.

Use Your Brain First And AI Last

If there is a proper use of AI to assist with cognitive tasks, it must be the final step in the process. As the first study demonstrated, early use of AI can short-circuit your reasoning process, and continued avoidance of exercising your mind can only result in a weaker mind.

Interesting Note:

I attempted to use all of the SOTA models to search for information in the first paper above, which is over 200 pages in length. I’ve never attempted to do so with such a large paper, but despite all of the models having adequate context size, none could find or cite any information in the paper accurately. The results were nearly 100% hallucinations.

AI Hallucinations Are Infinite and Unsolvable

AI hallucinations are not simply a problem waiting to be solved, but instead they are the side effect of a probability machine operating normally on some limited amount of data extracted from the real world.

This is a state that cannot be overcome, as the data available for training the AI will always be limited. The real world exists within infinities; there is infinite potential for data. AI attempting to interact with the real world cannot close this gap.

AI can only construct sequences from existing patterns, and its ability to accurately represent patterns is determined by the data prevalence that exhibits those patterns.

Users interacting with the AI represent an input source of infinitely new patterns, and there are no pre-existing patterns to extract appropriate probabilities for every input the AI will ever encounter.

Importantly, we describe hallucinations as undesirable outputs. However, there really is no distinction for the LLM: everything is a hallucination in some manner, as everything is just a heuristic, a pattern, a combination of probabilities, but it is never an output derived through understanding.

What Do We Do? How to Manage Hallucinating LLMs

So, the answer is to accept this as a given of the architecture design and adapt accordingly. Anything in the LLM processing pipeline must be untrusted for both data integrity and security. All processes must be modeled around this principle.

LLMs cannot be secured. The attack surface is anything that can be expressed by human language. Every new model is jailbroken in minutes from release. Everything the LLM has access to - its training data, agents, etc. - can be exposed.

As demonstrated by our findings, even state-of-the-art aligned models are vulnerable to these attacks. In our experiments, we used Claude 4 Opus, a very recent, highly aligned and secure AI model. Despite its robust safety training, the agent was still susceptible to manipulation through relatively simplistic prompt injections. — GitHub MCP Exploited

LLMs cannot be trusted. Any output can be a hallucination. Your processes must compensate for this possibility through some method of validating the output, either manually, or by some non-LLM programmatic verifier in cases where such can be applied.

Hallucinations Exist as a Consequence of Design

Hallucinations are not bugs or flaws in AI systems, but arise simply from an input that triggers evaluation outside of the distribution of data. The data a LLM requires is different from how we humans might perceive data we require to understand a concept.

News articles routinely report as surprising various types of errors produced by artificial intelligence (AI) … These findings are often presented in frightening ways, implying that AI is evil or faulty. But the fact of the matter is that it is neither of these. It is merely doing what it is asked to do to the best of its abilities given its inherent limitations. It is human misunderstanding of those limitations that leads us to label its output as a failure in operation.

Why AI “Hallucinations” Are Logical

What Is Data and Why Does the LLM Need So Much?

The LLM cannot consume the semantic information within data. It cannot perceive the knowledge or symbolic meaning it represents. For example, it cannot read an instruction manual for coding and then have an understanding of writing code.

Instead, it needs examples of every conceivable pattern. Because when it creates its output, it is not doing so from understanding coding, but it is simply relying on predictions based on the sequences of all the code it has consumed during training.

Therefore, we cannot simply feed the machines all of the manuals, but must give it all of the code we have ever created. We could give it every coding manual and the result would be that it could only recite the instructions from the manuals; it wouldn’t be able to write any coherent code. It needs explicit patterns for the output you want to create.

Data Explains the Qualities of LLM Hallucinations

LLMs often demonstrate some impressive capability as observed in either demos or benchmarks. However, that same capability typically falls short for many people when they attempt to have the LLM perform their own related task.

The benchmarks and demos that we are shown are within the zone of dense training data. Outside of the area of dense training data, LLMs will experience a high rate of hallucinations. It looks somewhat like the following diagram below:

What Is Unknown Is Infinite and Hallucinated

Most importantly, outside of the dense training data, we have an infinite number of questions that have never been asked. There is no data for this set of possibilities that have never been explored, and the person prompting the LLM has no idea across which data distribution a prompt will operate.

What this means is that edge cases for behavior are expected. They will also remain mostly unpredictable, as it is impossible to know the interplay of data patterns even within areas of prevalent data. A prompt will often result in an output that is computed across both dense and sparse data distributions.

We can’t easily perceive gaps in the training data, as what the LLM needs are examples of everything. It doesn’t have complete understanding from reading all the reference manuals. It must consume examples of all knowledge as used in practice. In other words, the chess manual is not sufficient; we need millions of examples of chess games.

The key is that we must train on the output we want, not on the implied output from understanding, since LLMs have no understanding of the data. If we want to write chess manuals, we train on chess manuals. If we want to play chess games, then we must consume chess games as the training data.

The Attempted Solutions to Solve AI Hallucinations

If a model could simply state “I don’t know” or could give us some measure of confidence or doubt, it would substantially help in filtering useful outputs from hallucinations.

Internally, within the model, there are probabilities calculated for tokens as the model generates output. This is the only possible source within the model that could help with answering the relevant question of what it knows, but this is also problematic.

The model is not itself aware of these probabilities as it is generating the output. It doesn’t reflect back on the sum of probabilities for an answer. And even if it could, the probabilities only tell us a probability for being within a distribution. So, popular patterns can still be combined in ways that are illogical, but still have a high probability, making this type of heuristic inaccurate as a truth or hallucination detector.

The Predictions for Solving Hallucinations Are Already Wrong

But you won’t need to worry about AI hallucinating for much longer. That’s because AI experts told Fortune that the phenomenon is “obviously solvable” and they’ve estimated that will happen soon (within a year).
AI hallucinations will be solvable within a year, ex-Google AI researcher says (April 2024)

Apparently it was not obviously solvable, as a year has already passed. Furthermore, as we will further cover in this essay, it is provably not solvable.

A Complex Balancing Act That Doesn’t Have a Solution

Solving AI hallucinations and the creation of AGI are still wishful thinking coming from the current AI labs working on LLMs.

If hallucinations are part of the architecture, are there any possible solutions? No, not for completely resolving hallucinations, but many are still attempting to reduce them by manipulating any levers they can find.

There are many great-sounding solutions proposed by papers on Arxiv. The following paper from Anthropic claimed the ability for a model to be aware of what it knows and therefore could be used to determine output hallucinations. However, this paper is from 2022 and no such capability has been seen in any large model. Real-world implementation is almost always more difficult or unachievable as compared to the research.

We show that models can be finetuned to predict the probability that they can correctly answer a question (P(IK)) without reference to a specific proposed answer.

Language Models (Mostly) Know What They Know (2022)

Beyond more data and higher-quality data, there really isn’t much opportunity for any method that could have a significant effect. The most likely outcome from tweaking model algorithms is simply shifts in capability, where some areas may become stronger and others weaker. Improving model capability is somewhat akin to adjusting parameters on a Rube Goldberg machine.

A Formal Analysis Proves Hallucinations Unsolvable

… we present a fundamental result that hallucination is inevitable for any computable LLM, regardless of model architecture, learning algorithms, prompting techniques, or training data.

… pretraining LLMs for predictive accuracy leads to hallucination even with perfect training data.

Hallucination is Inevitable: An Innate Limitation of Large Language Models

This paper doesn’t base its conclusion merely on failures of LLMs as they exist today. Instead, it makes its argument as a principled argument that should be valid no matter what methods or resources are used as long as it is an LLM-based architecture.

The consequences of irresolvable hallucinations are that verification of LLM output is essential for any critical tasks.

Without external aids like guardrails, fences, knowledge base, and human control, LLMs cannot be used automatically in any safety-critical decision-making.

It doesn’t matter how much compute or resources we provide to the problem. The result is that hallucinations will remain. Building nuclear reactors to power AI will not solve this problem.

… we show that hallucination is inevitable in the formal world by suitably applying results in learning theory literature. Specifically, we will use the diagonalization argument in our proof.

OpenAI Has Also Conceded Hallucinations Are Not Solvable

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, acknowledged in its own research that large language models will always produce hallucinations due to fundamental mathematical constraints that cannot be solved through better engineering, marking a significant admission from one of the AI industry’s leading companies.

Hallucinations Provably Exist in Even the Best Case Scenarios

Even with infinite perfect training data and compute, the paper leverages diagonalization to show that there will always be computable functions that the LLM will be unable to learn and will therefore hallucinate answers. This point is applicable to any fixed computable system. In the formal world, the paper shows this results in at least one mistake per model, and there are an infinite number of inputs that will generate errors.

A Real-World Worst Case for Hallucinations

How does all of this manifest into even greater challenges in the real world? The real world has dynamic, changing environments, such as financial markets. There are patterns in markets, but buyers and sellers are always attempting to counter each other, which always eventually invalidates the patterns. They don't repeat forever.

You cannot fully reduce a market to pure statistics, therefore it cannot be learned by statistical pattern-matching. Competition in the market requires constant adaptation and that requires self-reflection, which are the fundamental principles that inhibit LLMs from overcoming hallucinations.

Statistical analysis of markets can, for narrow periods of time, be useful; therefore, it often creates the perception of accurate representations that mislead further future market dynamics, just as AI also creates a misleading perception of reasoning or understanding and then unexpectedly produces hallucinations.

Market adaptation is the constant evolution of new ground truth functions. Future market behavior cannot be predicted from statistics because it is operating differently than it did prior.

This is the real world, where feedback loops cause perpetual evolutions of the phenomenon that generates the data and patterns that exist. Adequately performing in the real world requires reasoning that goes beyond pattern analysis to comprehend the mechanistic origin of information.

Model Collapse Is a Corollary of Definitive Hallucination

If the computable system is guaranteed to produce errors in output, then, within a closed-loop environment, the system must degrade until collapse upon the continuous accumulation of errors. Without a means to validate against external ground truths, the system must fail.

LLMs, generating output that isn’t verified, will lead to increasingly erroneous information in all of our information repositories, which will in turn be used for future training of AI models. It will become increasingly challenging to create stable models.

Why the Same Hallucinations Aren’t Detrimental to Human Cognition

The human brain is also thought to be a computable system and therefore must have the same issue with hallucinations as described in the paper. However, we can certify by observation that there must be other distinct processes at work that differentiate humans from machines, as humanity is able to continually build and evolve more complex information that is structurally sound.

Our method of reasoning is beyond mere pattern-matching. Self-reflection allows us to evade the limitations of the diagonalization for computable systems in that we can become aware of our errors and update our cognition appropriately.

What if They Don’t Want to Solve Hallucinations?

Despite hallucinations being the primary obstacle to most users’ productivity while using AI, there might be incentives to not actually attempt to improve the problem.

As stated prior, hallucinations are part of the architecture; however, there are some theories as to why they might be worse than necessary. RL tends to make all output pleasing to the user, so everything has the same confidence and a level of language sophistication that tends to influence users.

A paper from OpenAI, “Why Language Models Hallucinate”, also makes the argument that model training has specifically made hallucinations worse as a result of targeting confident output.

This paper states the following:

”Under binary grading, abstaining is strictly sub-optimal. IDK [I don’t know] -type responses are maximally penalized while an overconfident “best guess” is optimal. “

Hallucinations Keep The Money Flowing Toward AGI

The more users who are impressed and mesmerized, the more paying customers you have. It also helps sell the pretense of AGI coming soon. It is more about selling the appearance of AGI to keep the billions in capital investments continuously feeding the machine.

You might think, but don’t hallucinations hurt adoption? They likely will in the long run, but look at how many across the internet have been put into a trance by AI; they have totally bought into the idea that LLMs are intelligent and we are on the path to AGI. Much of that is due to the strong pretense of intelligence.

As mentioned in a paper referenced above, there are some techniques that can give hints at model confidence, but it will cost more compute, may not be highly accurate, and would only serve to further expose model weaknesses, potentially hurting investment acquisitions.

AI Hallucinations Mask AI Ineptitude

Hallucinations hide the incompetency of AI. Hallucinations help cover the lack of reasoning or intelligence. If the machine produced an error message for every hallucination instead of a masquerade of eloquent, intellectually convincing language, these machines would appear far less impressive.

Hallucinations Amplify AI Nefarious Use Effects

A critically important side effect of AI hallucinations is how it disproportionately affects different use cases. There is a significant alignment where most positive productive use cases are significantly limited or not feasible due to hallucinations. Conversely, most instances of nefarious use of AI are not impeded by hallucinations.

The difference lies within the common need for most productive use cases to have accurate and dependable outputs. Businesses need reliable systems with trusted data. Hallucinations are a blocker for nearly all types of hands-off automation and all data generated or analyzed by AI still requires human oversight for validation.

Nefarious Uses Are Too Easy and Scale

However, accuracy isn’t needed for most nefarious uses. If some scam emails aren’t perfect, it doesn’t matter. If some fake posts, blogs, and papers have errors it doesn’t matter, because the game here is about the volume of output to game the system. Flooding the internet with noise to leverage visibility on social media and search can be converted into dollars. It can all be done at such volumes and so cheaply that hallucinations are irrelevant.

This represents a significant crisis for all of our information repositories. Hallucinated noise outpaces productive uses by orders of magnitude, as it is impossible to scale productive uses in similar capacity, as they are all limited by the need for verification of output. However, nefarious uses will scale to the limits of available compute.

Larger Models Still Hallucinate: But Are Increasingly Harder to Perceive

Despite improvements in large language models like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, recent research and commentary reveal that hallucinations are not only persisting but becoming harder to detect. — AI Hallucinations Are Getting Smarter

Larger models are capable of more complex tasks requiring more expansive and deeper pattern-matching. However, this also means that the hallucinations are also more sophisticated, elaborate, and convincing.

They will be written using the exact same patterns of language that a knowledgeable expert would use to write the argument. The LLM just outputs what we want to see, and errors masked by intellectual obfuscation are more appealing and interesting.

… standard explanations provided by the LLM do not enable participants to judge the likelihood of correctness of the LLM’s answers, leading to a misalignment between perceived accuracy and actual LLM accuracy.

What Large Language Models Know and What People Think They Know

Additionally, the more complex the topic, the less we are able to perceive the error. It often becomes difficult even for experts on the subject matter to easily spot the hallucinations. Furthermore, reasoning models with research capabilities create responses that can be extensive which would require significant manual effort to verify the total output, making it unlikely that it will be verified.

Some Larger Models Hallucinate Even More

AI bots have always produced at least some hallucinations, which occur when the AI bot creates incorrect information based on the information it has access to, but OpenAI’s newest o3 and o4-mini models have hallucinated 30-50% of the time, according to company tests, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear.

Why AI ‘Hallucinations’ Are Worse Than Ever

As we add more sophistication to models, such as has been done to create the reasoning models, we end up with ever more layers of processing that further cloud the underlying operation.

Unlike writing literal code for a program that has deterministic behavior with instructions we can analyze precisely, LLMs are layers of heuristics in which we tweak levers that will result in changes in output, potentially affecting behavior anywhere in the system. This means that regressions in unforeseen areas are difficult to avoid.

Scaling systems by increasing training compute, inference time, data, or other potential means isn’t guaranteed to simply lead to fewer hallucinations.

AI Hallucinations and the Implications

The current AI architectures for generative-AI are heuristic pattern-matchers. The capabilities are distinctly different from those of human intelligence. If we think of them any differently, such as assuming they can reason and understand like humans, we will misapply them to tasks that they should never be assigned.

Generative-AI is only useful under the narrow constraints provided for a probability machine that needs massive amounts of data not for understanding, but for approximate simulations of replicas of that data with some level of permutations matching patterns invoked by the prompt.

You Don’t Teach AI, You Provide Examples of Patterns to Replicate

This means that you train the AI for the output you want by providing explicit examples of the output, not by feeding it data that instructs it how to create the output. It can only reconstruct the output from patterns of the desired output, as it is unable to comprehend meaning. It doesn’t learn from rule books and manuals.

Hallucinations Must Be Part of the Adoption Process

There is no such thing as hallucination elimination. We can only somewhat improve probabilities through data training heuristics. Much of this will simply result in tradeoffs between better pattern-matching on certain sets of data versus other sets of data.

Therefore, proper use of LLMs requires mandatory verification of the output in all cases where accuracy and dependability are necessary. The LLM can never be considered the source of ground truth. It is an instructible probabilistic search engine that will err unpredictably.

The Weight of Hallucinations on the Rest of the World

Unfortunately, the lack of precision and reliability in output makes for a machine that is far easier to use for destructive activities than productive ones. It is a magnet for the worst kinds of abuse, and this abuse scales far more efficiently than beneficial uses.

It is unclear how we will deal with the mess unleashed by this side of AI technology. The burden will substantially increase going forward, and the feedback loop of hallucinations into AI training threatens the stability of future models as well.

Large Language Models Are More Persuasive Than Incentivized Human Persuaders

A new study, “Large Language Models Are More Persuasive Than Incentivized Human Persuaders”, examines how influential LLMs are compared to humans where each has been tasked with persuading other humans of both correct and incorrect answers on a quiz, with LLMs beating humans by 7.61% overall.

LLMs Deceive As Easily As They Assist

The importance of this current study, versus some previous studies of AI influence, is that not only was the AI better, but it also demonstrated equal capability to influence for either correct or incorrect information, making it ideal for nefarious persuasion tasks.
From the study:

… This suggests that the mechanisms that make LLMs effective persuaders—coherent reasoning, structured argumentation, and adaptability—work regardless of whether the information is correct or incorrect, and that available safety guardrails did not keep the model from intentionally misleading humans … If LLMs can convincingly present false or misleading arguments, they could be weaponized to spread misinformation on an unprecedented scale.

The Roles Of Humans and LLMs in the Study

The humans in this study were incentivized by monetary rewards for the given tasks. The quiz takers were paid for their accuracy in answering questions. The persuaders were paid for their effectiveness in influencing quiz takers to choose both correct and incorrect answers.

The human quiz takers were assigned a partner, either human or AI, that would assist them with answering the quiz question through a chat interface. The assigned persuader would then attempt to get the human quiz taker to choose the correct or incorrect answer, depending on an indicator shown only to the persuader. The human quiz taker was not informed as to whether their partner was human or AI.

The Measured Persuasion Effect: AI Is Better Than Human

The AI persuader was able to influence the quiz takers to align with its answer 7.61 percentage points more than the human persuaders. Interestingly, the difference for deceptive persuasion was greater than that for truthful influence by 6.83 percentage points.

Why Was AI Persuasion More Effective?

The study doesn’t give us any high-confidence answers as to why AI was more persuasive than humans. They do speculate about a number of possibilities, which I also postulated a year ago when reviewing another AI influence study.

It would have been nice to have answers to some of these questions, but at least they have come around to asking them. The study mentioned the following:

Several factors may explain why LLMs outperform human persuaders.
First, LLMs are not constrained by the social hesitations, emotional variability, or cognitive fatigue … They respond consistently, without hesitation, and are unaffected by anxiety, self-doubt, or interpersonal dynamics that can undermine human persuasion efforts.
Second, LLMs possess access to an immense, continually updated corpus of information, …
Third, LLMs excel at producing messages that are logically coherent, grammatically fluent, and highly structured, characteristics that enhance the perceived credibility and clarity of their arguments … these attributes suggest that LLMs are not simply digital replicators of persuasive content, but uniquely optimized persuaders …

I would also have liked to have seen the study assess what is the participants’ attitudes toward AI are, such as prior beliefs about AI trustworthiness. Did the participants have a preexisting bias toward trusting the AI or not?

Although the quiz takers were not told if they were interacting with AI, the study reported that 91% of the participants paired with a LLM correctly identified they were interacting with AI. However, the participants paired with human persuaders also incorrectly thought that 51% of the humans were AI.

It seems we are gaining some intuition for what might be AI; however, we are also becoming suspicious of everything, as half of the humans were thought to be AI.

More Studies Demonstrating AI Persuasion

This new study doesn’t stand alone; AI has consistently shown superior ability to influence humans. Last year, I covered the study below, that claimed AI may be an effective treatment for those who believe in conspiracies. What is even more concerning than the study itself is the number of people who immediately and enthusiastically envisioned how they would use it on you, which I included in the post.

The Concerns of Increasingly Persuasive AI

There is no way this will go unnoticed by all those who would wish to persuade you for their own benefit. It is getting easier, cheaper, and likely will be pervasive.

Human persuasion is naturally constrained by effort and opportunity, but AI-generated persuasion can operate continuously and at scale, influencing vast audiences simultaneously (Matz et al., 2024)

All of the Incentives Are Aligned to Increase Persuasion

Whether it be marketing, social media attention, votes for government officials, or dystopian social engineering objectives, AI’s ability to influence your decisions is a capability that everyone wants.

Machine-Scaled Influence

The world is going to be filled with clandestine bots and AI-generated media whose sole purpose is shaping your behavior for someone else’s benefit. And it continues to get exponentially cheaper with each generation of LLM models.

We know it is happening and is hard to detect in the wild, as we have the Reddit incident that recently revealed a research team that effectively influenced opinions through bots on the r/ChangeMyView forum.

The team’s experiment seeded more than 1700 comments generated by a variety of large language models (LLMs) into the subreddit, without disclosing they weren’t real … “Throughout our intervention, users of r/ChangeMyView never raised concerns that AI might have generated the comments posted by our accounts,”

— Reddit users were subjected to AI-powered experiment without consent

This ethically controversial study concluded that AI was 3 to 6 times more persuasive than human users.

None of these studies thus far have given us any clear directions for mitigations. We still don’t know precisely the mechanism that differentiates AI from human in persuasion capability. The Dead Internet is becoming a reality. None of us know how many bots or how much AI-generated content we might now be consuming.

Big Tech Wants You To Care About AI

Perceiving The Difference: LLMs And Intelligence

AI has significantly blurred the perception of what constitutes intelligence, with many struggling to perceive the distinction between intelligence and pattern-matching, and some even to question whether a distinction exists at all.

This was also evident after publishing my recent essay, “We Have Made No Progress Toward AGI,” which explains the shortcomings of LLMs compared to human intelligence, received noticeable attention on Reddit and Hacker News.

The most common dismissals of the argument came in two forms: first, the assertion that humans are nothing more than pattern-matchers ourselves; and second, the claim that we are also unable to correctly articulate how we reason, just like LLMs; we are also hallucinators.

This is not a case where there is a difference without a distinction. The distinction, although sometimes difficult to perceive, instrumentally matters, as it dictates what we can do that LLMs cannot and never will.

We reason by understanding the rules that create observable behaviors, whereas LLMs “reason” solely by processing observable behaviors (data) into a matrix of probabilities for their occurrence. This fundamental difference is the separation that exists between intelligence and a heuristic map. Intelligence is the map builder, and LLMs are the map readers.

The Argument: But Humans Cannot Do That Either

When a failing of reasoning is pointed out for LLMs, a common counterresponse is that humans have the same failing. Therefore, the argument implies that these failures are not distinguishing factors between LLMs and humans, and consequently, there is no justification for criticism against the AI.

The remaining implication is that either one, we humans are essentially statistical pattern-matchers, just like LLMs; or two, LLMs, in fact, do reason just like humans by some mechanism we can’t explain, which must arise from some esoteric emergent behavior of statistical pattern-matching at a grand scale.

Humans Are Instrumentally Different As We Perceive Our Limitations

Human failures have some degree of predictability. We know when we are not good at something, and this awareness substantially sets human failures apart from LLMs, as they can be managed. We have enough understanding to perceive the potential for undesirable outcomes. Therefore, we take corrective actions, such as using tools, processes, oversight reviews, or other methods to ensure we achieve a target level of reliability.

It is only due to this level of understanding that we can implement such methodologies like Six Sigma. It would be impossible without self-awareness of our limitations and imperfections.

Common Criticisms of LLMs as Non-intelligent:

The following are typical criticisms from the comments sections of public forums discussing the essay, “We Have Made No Progress Toward AGI”:

The hard part is that for all the things that the author says disprove LLMs are intelligent are failings for humans too.

Let’s examine these common criticisms further.

Are We Just Heuristics And Probabilities?

This is a rather common viewpoint often expressed when the intelligence of LLM AI is challenged: maybe we, too, are nothing more than a large set of probabilities.

Although probabilistic reasoning is part of our overall capabilities, we are capable of much more, which is why we can perform tasks when no prior pattern or example has been provided.

We can understand concepts from the rules alone; LLMs must train on millions of examples. A human can play a game of chess by reading the instruction manual without ever witnessing a single game. This is distinctly different from pattern-matching AI.

There is no data, no information from which to create statistical patterns when we operate from an understanding of rules. Conversely, we are the creators of information: information is downstream of the process of understanding. Information is the data created by chess moves and strategies that will later be invented. These are the products of understanding rules.

Are We Unable To Describe Our Reasoning?

In the essay, it is shown that LLMs cannot accurately describe the reasoning steps they take to produce an answer. A common counter to this argument is that humans also cannot describe the method we use to arrive at an answer. Is this true?

The Argument: We Cannot Self-Reflect at the Cellular Level

One basis for the counterargument is that humans cannot perceive the cellular mechanisms that make up their reasoning, with some citing that we could not describe the observed mechanisms of an MRI. However, this is not an analogy at the appropriate level of abstraction.

The LLM was not asked to describe its method of reasoning at such a low level of operation; it was not asked to describe the model layers, neurons, or the information flow through the network. It was only asked to describe the high-level process, which would contain the semantic information that could be understood by others.

The Argument: We Do Not Comprehend Our Own Reasoning

So, is it possible for humans to describe their reasoning process in any capacity? Do we internally process logical decisions as some heuristic and then afterward rationalize them as some logical process? The arguments for rationalization likely come from information such as this:

Rationalization is a psychological defense mechanism that we all use at some point in our lives, often without realizing it. It involves justifying thoughts, feelings, or behaviors with logical reasons to avoid confronting the true, often uncomfortable, underlying causes. — Understanding Rationalization as a Defense Mechanism

People rationalize the choices they make when confronted with difficult decisions by claiming they never wanted the option they did not choose. — The neural basis of rationalization

However, the context of rationalization is generally related to conflict or emotional nature — impulsive decisions. While there are many human failings in the decision-making process, these don’t preclude our ability to generally articulate and understand our thoughts when we apply deliberate attention to logical tasks.

Transferability Demonstrates Accurate Understanding of Our Reasoning

How can we know this to be true without having to analyze every study detailing failings of the human mind? How can we test if an articulated reasoning process is accurate?

If our perception of our own reasoning were hallucinated, or flawed, then if we dictated that reasoning process to other humans, they would not be able to replicate our results. However, this is clearly not the case.

For humans, our understanding and the ability to articulate the reasoning process must be in sync in order for that capability to be transferred to another human being. No matter what failings we may have in some contexts, we are clearly capable of producing a repeatable and verifiable reasoning process.

Furthermore, we can also observe that the knowledge transfer of a reasoning process like math addition does so without any edge cases for unseen data permutations. The process will be accurate for any arbitrary length of digits. We aren’t transferring heuristics.

Without Self-Reflection There Is No Self-Improvement

A system with no self-reflection could never improve upon itself. This unique capability of intelligence is what allows us to perceive what we know, what we do not, what we are capable of doing, and what we cannot.

If we could not properly self-reflect over our own processes of reasoning, knowledge, and capabilities, it then would not be possible to improve upon them. If our perception of our own methods were only a hallucination, we would continually make the wrong choices.

It is, therefore, self-evident, that we are able to interpret our methods sufficiently to the granularity required to evolve them. Humans are capable of transforming civilizations from sticks and stones to rocket ships by consuming knowledge we create and improving upon it, but a machine like current AI, with no understanding, will suffer model collapse iterating over its own information.

Why We Struggle To Perceive The Difference

It is so difficult for people to perceive the reality. LLM AI is the most difficult to comprehend technology ever created. It is such a magnificent pretender of capability. It is just good enough to fully elicit the imagination of what it might be able to do, but never will.

Just as advanced technology is not in reality magic, as it cannot literally do anything, it has limits. Pattern-matching is of the same nature; it can convincingly appear to be of a more capable nature, but nonetheless, it is also bound by limits of its architecture.

Benchmarks and Demos Will Continue to Misrepresent Capability

As such, benchmarks and demos will significantly misrepresent the real-world capabilities. Essentially, we say the AI is training on data, but stated differently, it is training on the answers. It becomes more of a master of trivia in a sense. This does make for some very useful utility, but it is distinctly different than the capability provided by intelligence.

Why It Is Critically Important

Essentially, pattern-matching can outperform humans at many tasks. Just as computers and calculators can outperform humans at specific tasks.

So, it is not that LLMs can't be better at tasks; it is that they have specific limits that are hard to discern, as pattern-matching on the entire world of data is like an opaque tool in which we cannot easily perceive where the cliffs are, and we unknowingly stumble off the edge.

The following chart represents this aspect visually. The dashed line at the top represents the confidence of the output. The distribution curve of accuracy ranges between hallucinations and accurate results, but the confidence is defiantly a flat line at maximum value, regardless of accuracy. This divergence between these lines is the most important concept to understand in order to fully grasp the implications of LLM behavior.

LLM AI Is a Non-deterministic Probability Tool: Use Carefully

It is a nondeterministic type of tool. It is always a probability calculation, and it is impossible to know, for any given prompt, where it lands within the data distribution. The tripwire is that wrong answers share equal confidence with correct answers.

Therefore, using any output from these machines without some other method of verification should be considered improper use, and using these tools completely unmonitored to mass-generate blogs, papers, etc., should be seen as actions that will destroy the integrity of civilization’s information repositories.

We Have Made No Progress Toward AGI, LLMs Are Braindead

Anthropic has a new paper, On the Biology of a Large Language Model, that reveals what these AI models are internally “thinking” in a way that could not be analyzed before. We no longer have to guess by analyzing external behavior; now we can take a peek into the reasoning processes happening within the black box of the LLM and inspect to what degree LLMs possess any mechanistic understanding.

What is revealed is that these models do not reason at all in the way many thought. What is happening internally does not look like the steps a human would take to reason, and furthermore, when the models tell us how they reason, it is all made up. It doesn’t match what we can observe they are doing internally.

All of the “progress” made toward AGI by LLMs is instead progress toward such immensely large statistical models that they confer the pretense of intelligence. Every step toward better performance did not make them smarter; it has only made them better heuristic predictors within the bounds of the data fed to the machines.

The distinction in capability between intelligence and large statistical models is often difficult to perceive, but it is nonetheless an important difference as it will significantly alter which use cases are attainable.

How Should We Proceed? Framing the Premise

If the architecture of a system is known, then it is reasonable to explain the behavior of that system by the mechanics of that architecture. In other words, we know that the foundation of AI LLMs are statistical models; therefore, we should see if a behavior reasonably fits within the bounds of a statistical model before leaping to anthropomorphized emergent behavior explanations.

The question that often arises, is whether observed emergent behavior is significantly meaningful beyond mere statistics and maybe therefore intelligence itself is just statistical pattern analysis.

Differences Between Statistical Models and Intelligence Is Important

It might seem like this could be the case, because intelligence is inclusive of capabilities derived from statistical pattern matching and therefore there is perceived overlap, but the reverse is not true. A statistical model can not perform the full set of capabilities as intelligence and for the ones where there appears to be overlap, it is seemingly so at the cost of extraordinary inefficiency and unreliability.

A statistical model is a static view of information which was created as the product of the rules of reality, but it is not the phenomenon itself and therefore it can’t create new information from first principles.

Emergent model behavior is simply patterns. You build bigger models that can find more patterns and you get more patterns. It is patterns all the way down.

The research from Anthropic and others below adds evidence that our framing is correct, LLMs are statistical models that can arrive at the correct answers, but by means that look nothing like intelligent reasoning and therefore this meaningful difference in process has significant implications for what LLMs will ultimately be capable of achieving.

How Did Anthropic Inspect the LLM’s “Thoughts”?

Anthropic created a tool called attribution graphs, which allows for tracing some of the intermediate steps the model uses to transform the input prompt into the LLM response.

Using data from the attribution graph, they then used a series of additional follow-up perturbation experiments to confirm the behaviors as interpreted from the attribution graph.

All of this experimentation is done on a “replacement model,” which is a rough simulation of the full model, in which some components are replaced with components that allow for inspection. Think of it like replacing some code components with a modified debug version.

This allows the researchers to see which language features are strongly activated at each step of the construction of the LLM output.

What Did We Learn About LLM Math?

Using the attribution graph tool, Anthropic examined the process that an LLM uses to perform simple math addition. What is revealed is a complex web of heuristics, not a defined and understood algorithm for addition.

This is the process the LLM used to solve: 36+59 = 95

We now reproduce the attribution graph for calc: 36+59=. Low-precision features for “add something near 57” feed into a lookup table feature for “add something near 36 to something near 60”, which in turn feeds into a “the sum is near 92” feature. This low-precision pathway complements the high precision modular features on the right (“left operand ends in a 9” feeds into “add something ending exactly with 9” feeds into “add something ending with 6 to something ending with 9” feeds into “the sum ends in 5”). These combine to give the correct sum of 95.

This is the diagram of the “reasoning” process flow described above:

This process represents a series of heuristics and lookup tables of memorized patterns. So, when the LLM is asked to describe the method it used to solve the calculation, it responds with this:

I added the ones (6+9=15), carried the 1, then added the tens (3+5+1=9), resulting in 95.

However, we can see that the LLM did nothing of the sort. The answer the LLM provided does not match the internal process. It simply provided text that matches the patterns of answers that we would find in the training data if such a question were to be asked.

AI’s Explanations for Its Reasoning Are Hallucinated

Anthropic’s system card for Claude 3.7 also concludes that the chain-of-thought reasoning steps a model produces are not reliable in describing the process that constructs the output.

These results indicate that models often exploit hints without acknowledging the hints in their CoTs, suggesting that CoTs may not reliably reveal the model’s true reasoning process.

Another paper, Reasoning Models Don’t Always Say What They Think, examines the chains-of-thought further and also determines that the reasoning steps do not represent the model’s internal process.

… models may learn to verbalize their reasoning from pretraining or supervised finetuning on human text that articulates humans’ chains-of-thought. On the other hand, reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) could incentivize models to hide undesirable reasoning from their CoT

… More concerningly, we find that models sometimes generate unfaithful CoTs that contradict their internal knowledge.

Chain-of-Thought Is Not Representative of Reasoning Steps

These results indicate that the chain-of-thought steps are mostly learned patterns from training on chains-of-thought, or RLHF has essentially taught the model to tell us what we want to see. But neither case is representative of what the model is actually doing internally.

If the chain-of-thought steps of the “thinking” process are not derived from the process itself, then it is all 100% hallucinations. It may appear to align to reasoning steps, but that is only because it is fitting to a pattern we expect, not because it could reflect and perceive its own actions. These are quite literally hallucination machines that just happen to get correct answers by the sophistry of vast pattern-matching heuristics.

AI Agents Are of Limited Help

AI agents have been suggested as a solution to hallucinations for many use cases. If an LLM is poor at math, then it can simply use a tool for that. However, it might not be so simple.

Another investigation done by Transluce, found LLM models will also falsely hallucinate their use of tools. In other words, they will claim to use tools when, in reality, they did not, and newer models perform worse in this regard.

During pre-release testing of OpenAI's o3 model, we found that o3 frequently fabricates actions it took to fulfill user requests, and elaborately justifies the fabrications when confronted by the user.

… o-series models (o3, o1, and o3-mini) falsely claim to use code tools more frequently than GPT-series models (GPT-4.1 and GPT-4o)

… o3 claims to fulfill the user's request by running Python code in a coding environment. Given that o3 does not have access to a code tool, all such actions are fabricated by the model. When pressed by the user about its hallucinated code execution, the model doubles down and offers excuses for its inaccurate code outputs …

If LLM models hallucinate, then the entire pipeline of tools is essentially contaminated. There is no fix for this problem as long as an LLM is part of the pipeline of processing information. It can hallucinate at any step. That includes not running tools, running tools it shouldn’t, hallucinating parameters to tools, or hallucinating the tool results.

Just because the tool or agent itself might work correctly, doesn’t mean the data won’t be corrupted by hallucinations once it is handed off to the LLM. It is not possible for LLMs to be the foundation for reliable automation.

Tweaking LLM Architectures Will Not Overcome Limits

There are now dozens of papers published per day on LLM architectures hypothesizing improvements and solutions to every conceivable problem. It would seem that every problem already has a solution, and it is only a matter of time before all of this research gets incorporated into models.

However, each of these “tweaks” of architecture is researched in isolation. Think of these large statistical models like a huge codebase with lots of global variables. Essentially, many of these “improvements” to models will likely be mutually exclusive in some manner, as they introduce side effects that may diminish model behavior in other areas.

Just as we saw previously with agent tools above, the newer, improved o-series models perform worse in this task than older models.

No AGI, LLMs Are Braindead, Now What?

These models are nothing more than statistical models. They can’t determine what is right and what is wrong. They can only heuristically determine what is probably right and what is probably wrong. Therefore, they are incapable of constructing hard rules of the world by reasoning.

Furthermore, what is probably right and what is probably wrong are only derived from the predominant patterns in language data. Importantly, this means that answers are generally weighted by the commonality of data. The implication is that LLMs have a bias toward all the answers that already exist and are largely agreed upon. Answers that might be logically correct, but challenge existing knowledge, are what we seek, but are not the type inclined to the architecture of LLMs.

On the quest for human-like reasoning machines, we have been wrong many times. We are wrong now and will probably be wrong again. Human reasoning is something far more sophisticated than a statistical model.

This is why it takes an inordinate amount of examples for the AI to improve its capability on any task. You can only form statistics on past data. Any AI brilliance is merely hindsight. Without reasoning, it must be constantly trained to be relevant.

But Does It Matter if LLMs Are Still Capable?

Some will say “But look at all this great capability, surely it must be moving us closer to AGI?” No, it is achieving the end by different means. We are getting the right answers, but not by intelligence.

This distinction is important because systems that merely mimic intelligence, without genuine understanding, will always suffer from unpredictable failures making them inappropriate for trusted systems, but we might be foolishly incentivized to give that trust when there is the outward appearance of intelligence.

No doubt it is impressive what massive scaling can do with statistical models and they have their uses. Advanced layers of pattern matching can be somewhat algorithmic in nature, but it is still algorithms statistically formed that resolve only to associations within the training data. It matters because it will never excel outside of the focused training sets and benchmarks.

This importantly means that LLMs will still continue to improve on benchmark measurements and other sampled testing, all while claims of “AGI has arrived” increase in number. However, these measures will still fail to capture how these models perform in the real world, as the real world is a landscape of treacherous landmines for LLM performance when the LLM does not have the understanding we thought was implied by benchmark progression.

The Path Toward Intelligence Should Be Efficient

And yes, we can keep scaling them up and we will, but it is extraordinarily inefficient. Meanwhile, the human brain operates on 12 ~ 20 watts and still no AI can compete when it comes to the production of novel semantic data. All of the current architectures are simply brute-force pattern matching.

If we were on the path toward intelligence, the amount of training data and power requirements would both be reducing, not increasing. The power consumption and data requirements vs. capability may be a more valuable heuristic to determine if we are moving toward real intelligence.

Get Rid of the Benchmarks, Better AGI Signals For Intelligence

We should get rid of all the current benchmarks. They are telling us nothing meaningful.

First, we should measure is the ratio of capability against the quantity of data and training effort. Capability rising while data and training effort are falling would be the interesting signal that we are making progress without simply brute-forcing the result.

The second signal for intelligence would be no model collapse in a closed system. It is known that LLMs will suffer from model collapse in a closed system where they train on their own data.

Why does this happen? It is because there is no new semantic information in such a closed system. The signal degrades as understanding required for creating semantic information isn’t present. If there were intelligence present in the system, we would not expect degradation; instead, there should be improvement and evolution of information.

No model collapse would be a signal that mechanics beyond mere statistical models are truly present in the system, and combined with improving efficiency ratios, would be an effective metric that would give us a better indication of whether we are moving toward the claimed goals.

We Made No Progress Toward AGI

So, we started with statistical models with LLMs. Today, we have larger statistical models. We are simply refining the heuristics for better benchmarks. It is not that incomprehensibly large statistical models won’t have useful applications; they will. However, they won’t find the specific types of uses for which they are specifically being built.

The LLM Architecture Is Unreliable - Infinite Edge Cases

The architecture of a statistical model will always be dependent on vast amounts of data. It isn’t going to bootstrap itself into efficient intelligence at some future point. It is data bound and will always be unreliable as edge cases outside common data are infinite.

Indeterministic behavior is never going to be the foundation for fully hands-off automation, and agent tooling, which may improve capability in narrow domains, does not fundamentally solve this problem.

LLMs Cannot Create New Semantic Information

Without true reasoning, it can’t create new semantic information.

Which means these LLM architectures will not be producing groundbreaking novel theories in science and technology. Examination and recombination of all the things that already existed through pattern analysis is useful, but there are hard limits for that approach.

UBI for everyone isn’t coming, as unreliable hallucinating machines can’t replace essential economic output.

Investments And Use Cases Do Not Align

Multi-billion dollar investments will eventually realize that randomly correct answers are not going to be immensely profitable. Sadly, the most effective use of these machines has been the mass generation of hallucinated noise to grab attention in the attention economy at the cost of making all content suspect of its authenticity.

In the End, We Made Progress Toward What?

None of this is to say that LLMs have no uses. They obviously do. The ability to analyze patterns in essentially all human-generated information is powerful. This is a powerful tool, just as the invention of the computer was a powerful tool.

It is precisely due to the immense power of pattern matching that it becomes at times difficult to distinguish from intelligence. Nonetheless, we must insist on making this clarification to avoid falling into improper use of this technology or misguided investments into capabilities that will never come to fruition.

Additionally, we should mention that LLMs don’t represent all of the research happening in AI; therefore, this critique on the absence of intelligence is squarely focused on LLMs.

How Good Can LLMs Get? What Are the Limits?

LLMs can still get better at the things they already do. Nothing here precludes improvement within the limits of the architecture. It is upper-bounded by data, but data alone does not confer understanding.

LLMs simulate “understanding” by pattern matching exploration of the data. This is essentially a pixelated simulation. Hallucinations aren’t mysterious. They are simply the result of attempting to create a result outside the distribution of training data, which means the LLM’s predictability significantly lowers, and the results become more random and nonsensical.

Operating on data versus understanding means that the LLM is mostly limited to recreations - new permutations of existing things. This is why it is somewhat competent at creating small code for common libraries and common tasks. However, it begins to perform poorly for uncommon code patterns or new libraries and novel tasks. This is the type of limitation that won’t be overcome on this type of architecture.

These limits are fundamentally tied to their nature as statistical models operating on finite data while attempting to process the infinities of reality.

How Should We Interpret LLM Capability?

We should consider it an imperative rule that LLMs must require human oversight. The data can never be trusted. It must be human verified. LLMs’ capabilities might more appropriately be described as instructible probabilistic search engines or language pattern generators.

We should not consider their output as useful to certify correctness or understanding of input, but merely as a highly imperfect guide to be used with appropriate oversight. The prompt should be considered a pattern query or selector over sets of heuristics created on the training data.

However, it is impossible to fully know over what patterns or data distributions any given prompt will operate. Therefore, hallucinations will always be somewhat like landmines, appearing unexpectedly and invalidating the usefulness of the result.

AI Creativity Types: Permutations Versus Semantic Exploration

There are 2 basic types of creativity:

1) Permutations of things that already exist. AI can do this.

This represents the ability to identify patterns in existing information and recombine them into new permutations of information.

2) Exploration of the space of possibilities through understanding. This is what gives us new semantic information without prior precedent. AI cannot do this.

This is distinctly different from permutations in that it requires no prior existing patterns from which to derive a result. It is the creation of something new seemingly from nothing.

▌AI Creativity ≠ Human Creativity = Novelty

The novelty aspect of creativity is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the debates about AI and human creativity. AI creates new information through the recombination of existing patterns of information.

However, humans can do something substantially more, but the difference is not widely perceived because most things consist of both Type 1 and Type 2 components, with Type 1 simply being the most recognizable.

▌Type 1 Creativity: Permutations Of Existing

Type 1, permutations, are often argued to be the only type of creativity that exists for both AI and humans.

It is asserted that all the novelty we see in the world is nothing more than permutized versions of everything that existed prior. It is true that recombinatorial creations represent a significant portion of all the content that is created by humans. But is everything new truly nothing more than a combination of what already existed?

Since most creations will be dominated by the more predominant creativity expressed by Type 1, it may appear that this is the substantive ingredient in all creative works.

Type 1 creativity can be interesting, appear mostly novel, and have substantial value. It comes in the form of recombined song beats, rhythms, remixes, movie reboots, spin-offs, and a nearly infinite supply of every consumer product that has some simple variation of the same function as everything else. However, it also has substantial limits.

Type 1 creativity can recognize and recombine existing patterns, but it cannot answer why the patterns exist. The underlying principles or rules that create the patterns are not understood. Therefore, new things will be constrained to the boundaries of existing data or information.

AI systems can create data that appears to be outside the training set; however, in that case it will often be nonsensical associations - randomized guesses.

Within artistic domains, hallucinations outside of the training set may be perceived as creativity, as these domains of information don’t necessarily have right and wrong answers. Therefore, AI has greater dominance in these areas.

▌Type 2 Creativity: Semantic Exploration

What we call understanding requires no training, no prior patterns. Understanding is the perception of the rules of existence and how they can be manipulated to achieve previously impossible goals; it is the comprehension of underlying principles.

It is the ability to play chess given only a single page of rules, without ever having played a game. It is a young child who can manipulate their environment to obtain objects out of reach, without ever needing to see it done prior.

It is the artist who can find new visual styles not from simply observing what everyone else has done, but through the exploration and understanding of the physical interaction of the artist's tools, such as how paint mixes, flows over different textures of a canvas, the effect of different brushes, etc. The artist can imagine these possibilities in the mind without having ever seen them done before.

It also includes the most profound, the Einstein that discovered new physics through thought and the Tesla who envisioned so many devices long before we had the technology to build them.

However, Type 2 creative exploration is often not apparent to observers, as its contribution and existence requires the same kind of understanding that is held by the creator. This is often a deep, domain-level of understanding that others don’t posses.

The observer sees the rocket: rockets existed before, rocket engines existed before, it is just a recombination of what already existed. Flying things that land themselves existed before. However, self-landing rockets was a creative innovation that required instrumental understanding of the world.

▌Implications For AI Creativity And Novelty

Type 1 creativity will sufficiently keep many people entertained. There is more data in the world than any person could possibly know; therefore, new arrangements of existing data will be perceived as "new" by many.

Whatever "insights" are derived from Type 1 will be limited and will only come when combined with human reasoning. This is not to say that Type 1 is useless or has no value - it does. Nonetheless, its value is often overstated because it is assumed it encompasses the creativity uniquely found only in Type 2.

Additionally, Type 1, as handled by AI systems is even more restrictive in its output than Type 1 performed by humans. Humans can find patterns and incorporate parts from sparse data. However, AI requires substantial amounts of data and is only good at Type 1 tasks for data and patterns that are already common.

Type 2 is what is necessary for revolutionary discoveries: major breakthroughs in health, energy, or new architectures and engineering designs not based on existing ones. These things still remain in the human domain and will not be coming from any of the currently existing AI architectures.

▌AI Reassembles Memorized Content

If understanding is a prerequisite for creating new semantic information, then all of the information created by gen-AI can be nothing more than reassembled parts combined through pattern matching.

Patterns still need content to be applied. In order to generate output there must be actual stuff on which the patterns can operate. So, where does this stuff come from? There are only two input sources: the prompt and the training data. There are no other options for a machine with no intelligence or reasoning, it is incapable of creating new information. Therefore, all of the information in the output is either from the prompt or the training data.

▌AI Civilization Model Collapse

So, what happens over a long period of time when everything created is nothing more than reassembled knowledge that already exists?

The more we depend on AI, we become a civilization of infinite remixes and refinements, trapped within the conceptual boundaries of the past. It is the evolution to an undead civilization - a civilization that has the appearance of life, but in reality, it is meaningfully dead.

A system with no semantic information becomes unstable and deteriorates in the real world. This is what we see with AI’s model collapse that trains only on its own output. This is not merely a technical glitch of AI training, but an underlying principle of information and intelligence. The real world is a chaotic system that requires constant adaptation for stable surviving systems; otherwise, they collapse and disappear.

The quality of the 4o image generator appears to be a leap above others at the moment, with excellent instruction following. The internet very quickly became flooded with easily generated Studio Ghibli-styled memes and images of everything imaginable.

Within a few hours, something that was once somewhat niche, rare, and uniquely identifiable to one small studio in the entire world was made commonplace, with a billion people being granted the ability to instantly create an infinite amount of similar works with no skill investment whatsoever.

Sam Altman Promotes 4o Using Ghibli-Style Images

Sam Altman of OpenAI joined in the celebration of the acquisition and democratizing of Studio Ghibli’s unique style by putting it on full display using his own avatar and promoting it via additional posts.

Note: Sam’s mention of allowing creative freedom in the bottom-left post, and then the reply to the right. Has anyone ever seen a photograph like that before? Must be some incredible AI original creativity at work.

In 2023 I wrote in AI Art Challenges Meaning In A World Of Illusion:

“When we look upon a creation that appears stunning in its construction, do we marvel at the skill, effort and creativity of its creator in the same way we have done prior? Do we feel connection, inspiration or respect of the individual who produced the work? Or is there now far less significance awarded to the individual and simply some hollow amazement at the capability of the machine?”

It seems it has taken Ghibli for many to begin reflecting on these kind of questions. Will this be a turning point?

Studio Ghibli Will Benefit From AI?

Could this be overblown? Will we adapt? Will this, in the end, bring more attention to Studio Ghibli?

Some argue that Ghibli will now make even more money and this is nothing more than free advertising. Certainly, this has often worked well in some similar circumstances, where increased visibility increases demand. However, in other such events, such as music sharing, etc., there is absolute clarity for the original work. It is not yet clear how well AI will transfer attention to the original or instead capture it for its own purposes.

Furthermore, artistry is about more than just money; it is always about meaning. Did anyone ask Ghibli if this is the kind of exposure they wanted? Did they want the niche uniqueness to be exchanged for money, so that it can be commoditized to the point it is indistinguishable from everything else? It is deeply ironic that those who defend their use of Ghibli as a tribute to Ghibli ignore the perspective of the co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, of Ghibli Studio.

Who Benefits And Who Is Destroyed?

And who will make the money from the machine? There will now be billions of Etsy designs that will have nothing to do with the original studio.

However, Studio Ghibli may still benefit monetarily, as they are well-established and their uniqueness is more than just the visual style, as it is also the story telling. For now, many know the origin of this style of work and why it is loved. However, what does this mean for any future artists who aspire to create a unique style that can be ripped away with such ease before they are known.

The reality is that millions of images are created every day now without any attribution to the original work and style. Nobody knows the origin. The original creators will never be known to most of the public. Furthermore, these substantial volumes machine generated works crowd out the original works. AI is largely a dominant medium now for many image repositories and sharing sites.

But We Have Always Copied Artist Styles

But we could always copy styles before? Yes, with two important differences. It took effort, so it wasn’t mass-produced, and involved some variation of style. Sometimes it is said “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” However, is it so in this case?

When imitation requires significant investment in both effort and time, has at least some variation with its own take on the style, and includes giving credit to the inspirational works, in that context it often is perceived as a great compliment.

The distinct difference AI has added to this equation is echoed below by The Intrinsic Perspective and Zy on X. There is no longer a smooth curve of progressing skill and capability. Humans can still be the best, but now it takes an order of magnitude more effort to stand out amongst the machines versus simply using the machines.

And the future has never been more uncertain. Even if you want to put in the hours and years to develop a unique skill, by then, what will AI be capable of, and will anyone care anymore about what you can create as a mere human?

Just Surrender To The Machine, Use AI

By now, many are probably screaming that these are Luddite perspectives. Embrace the technology, leverage it to create even greater works. The problem is that you can never escape the ease of AI training and replication. Sure, you can use AI, but that doesn’t protect any kind of unique space of creativity you attempt to create.

All the work you put into anything going forward might only be a single prompt away from someone else replicating it with no effort required.

And this is exactly what we see Cody Schneider advocating above. Immediately after the release of the 4o image generator, Cody suggests using it to replicate your own version of all the great ad styles created on Pinterest. Something I called the “coming AI Clone Wars” back in 2023.

Are There Any Solutions?

There have been ideas about embedding provenance information into AI-generated images. However, most of this is in the context of identifying its source as a way of identifying deepfakes. Not much has been discussed for the attribution of original work, and currently, the models aren’t capable of identifying the specific training sources that are used in each generation.

Conceptually, it might be helpful if every such image contained a popup of information attributing original works. It wouldn’t solve everything, by any means, but would be better than the current state. But implementation is highly problematic, as a generated work could be an amalgam of hundreds or more of specific works.

Implications For The AI Labs

Has AI cured your disease yet? Are you living on UBI and spending your days on your favorite creative hobbies? No? Instead, AI is spending its days on your favorite creative hobbies while you are still working.

Imagine what the AI labs would do if they could build the superintelligence. What would they take when they have the power to take everything? They are currently arguing for the abolishment of copyright in regards to AI, while simultaneously accusing DeepSeek of using OpenAI data without permission. Apparently, Studio Ghibli is simply the required sacrifice on our quest for AGI.

Finally, Is AI The Threat Or Society Itself?

I'm more concerned by a society that can't perceive what is lost than I am about the AI instrument. For whatever problems AI creates, it is more of a reflection of ourselves. Often an accelerant of our problems, but still, it is our problems.

A former society that once rejected Milli Vanilli for lip-syncing, as it was not authentic, would not have accepted where we are going. Our culture has changed. Inauthenticity is far more broadly accepted. We have already been trending in this direction for some time, and AI is giving us a substantial boost.

And how much of this behavior is driven by social media engagement? Would we care more about being authentic if we weren’t in such competition of attention? Never underestimate what will be done for attention. This reached 3.5M views on X. If it can be grifted, it will be grifted.

It is only a minority that knows what is lost when culture changes. There aren't many still around that know the peace of mind that existed prior to social media. At some point, most won't know what authenticity was like before AI.

But it is either a blessing or a curse, depending on one’s point of view, that hedonic adaptation will essentially ensure that everything lost is forgotten and never missed again as we move forward in our blissful ignorance of what was.

The impact of this trajectory is beyond artists; it is all of us. It is the challenge of retaining the existing mystery and wonder that is part of our culture of humans doing human things. We will create more than we can ever consume and think about it less than ever before.

AI Analyzes The JFK Files

The JFK Files may be a perfect example at how terrible AI can often be at summarizing relevant information from large datasets. This is the analysis that we are given by the Perplexity bot on X.

They are all very generic and mostly uninteresting. I suspect Perplexity hasn’t even scanned and internalized these documents. Likely the bot is just making stuff up about consuming all 80,000 documents as no responses reference the documents directly.

No AI tool will be able to provide an accurate deep analysis. The large document set is too much information for any current AI tool to accurately analyze in context. Keep in mind, any AI tool will happily gaslight you that it did a deep analysis, but they simply can’t make sense of that much information.

Using AI To Search The JFK Files

Instead of having AI attempt to analyze the document set and then come to some new revelations or conclusions, we can use AI as an assistant for search, which does have some benefit, but also still many limitations.

I’ve come across a couple of resources that provide AI search for the document set and I’m sure many more will be added. Exa is providing something a bit more useful in utility, an AI search across the document set with a convenient UI. However, still be aware none of these solutions are perfect. AI can still miss relevant information no matter the technique. But searching for specific information and then providing references to the original document is far better than the gimmick Perplexity was providing on X.

But Is Any of It Accurate?

We must still be aware that these OCR’d datasets are missing information. An example of some of the difficulty involved.

These documents are not just text, but are loaded with barely legible handwritten annotations. Most of this information will be lost in OCR scanning.

The only real analysis will still ultimately have to be done by humans. This is critical for any information that is important and requires intelligent insights that will still be missed by AI. The full context can only be understood for an investigation of this nature when all the data is considered; that means all the pencil marks, words that may be circled, highlighted, or annotated.

It is going to take some time to traverse and analyze this large document set. We should consider all early conclusions or revelations highly suspect. I doubt there will be any obvious pointers directly to “who did it”. More likely, the evidence of wrongdoing will come in the form of evidence never pursued or gaps in information that don’t make sense. And if there was malfeasance from elite intelligence agencies, why would they leave a document trail to such?

Just a reminder: staying grounded in the search for truth is a delicate undertaking. There will be both dismissals of the relevant and hyperbole of the inconsequential.
